I straight up stick to top lane or jungle.
I was runnin an AD build for garen top lane when every mother fricker in the game said he was only good as a tank/support.

easiest way is to figure out what play style you have and coordinate that with a lane and champs
After that, the best way to not suck is to not feed. No matter what you do don't feed.
Do that and you'll be fine

Dying a lot. Feeding the other team is bad, very bad. It's better to play safe and not get a lot of kills but not die a lot than to be overly aggressive and die a lot.

I went to some giant League of Legends tourney that had announcers and everything at PAX last year. It seemed like an interesting game, although weird how into watching the tourney people were. We only stayed for about 5 minutes
