Mind if I ask a ballpark on the price paid? I've really been craving a regular old .357 revolver. Had one years ago (sort of, not mine, was given to me, then taken back later), but I shot it a lot and loved it.

$500

I know the fellow I purchased from and when he tells me "my books tell me I bought it in 1988 and I fired it a few times and its sat in the safe ever since" I believe him

It's LNIB even being as old as it is

Anyone know the difference in a model 66 and 686?

I have a model 66-2 I bought from a coworker when I was 18 in 1990 that is my favorite gun.

It looks a lot like the S&W you have there.

Most newer revolvers have a small locking mechanism by the hammer to disable it with a small tool.

Kind of ignorant when it comes to pistols so please excuise my ignorance but why would you do this?

The 66 s&w is built on a smaller frame than the 686

Gotcha.

It's a sweet shooting lil revolver that I can carry around in my back pocket.
