See above.

He left because we were trying to make the switch to a 3-4 and a true MLB was not as valuable as it is in the 4-3...hence why the Falcons were not willing to pay him as much and the Saints were.

What you are saying, is that when Lofton became a FA (FA started March 12, Lofton signed March 25), the Falcons assumed they would be playing a 3-4, and didn't value Lofton as much because of the assumed switch to the 3-4. Nolan was hired January 17th. The Falcons did not switch to the 3-4. So what I was asking was, between the time Nolan was interviewed and hired, and we signed Lofton (over 2 months), the Falcons were not sure of what defense they were running? Doesn't seem to add up...

I think that Vilma's time as a WLB this year help him. Lofton is clearly one of the ILBs. Galette obviously fits great as an OLB, similar to how Freeny has adjusted.

Which is fine, and I thank him for helping bring the Saints a title while here.

he was a completely different player a few years ago. we no longer use him the same way with lofton. the 3-4 gives vilma more value IMO

this gives new life to our younger players IMO. Wilson and Junior should get on the field more. It also means Bunkley gets on the field WAY more which is a great thing IMO

Instead, you see if he's willing to sign a lesser contract that reflects what you expect out of him in a role that will become of less importance over time...which is exactly the offer the Falcons offered. He didn't like it, and decided to walk.

The falcons offered him more money than the saints...

Vilma doesn't fit at all. Lofton and Galette fit fine.

Lofton and Vilma at ILBs, Gallette and Tez as OLB's rushing the passer. That sounds good.

Back to Will Smith. He has never been good against the run and has been a pure pass rusher for the most part. Now that may have been his assignment, which is all fine and good, but he has never been good againts the run. I'd image DE's in a 3-4 need to be good at that position.

Vilma will not be on this team next year.

There is so much wrong in this thread lol. Bunkley did not play in a 3-4 in Denver. Denver played a 4-3. Von Miller wasn't a rush 3-4 LB. He played as a regular OLB in a 4-3, then would drop down as a DE in passing situations.

Lofton is perfectly suited to play as a MLB in a 3-4. I really don't know what that one guy is talking about lol.

Will Smith is like 290 pounds and is pretty strong. I don't think he will be back, but I think he has the size and power to play DE in a 3-4.

Hope the person who said Vilma and Shanle are being moved inside was trolling. Hawthorne will be moved inside. Someone else said Junior and Lofton didn't fit a 3-4 lol. This 3-4 thing is really screwing with people.

I think Hicks could play NT or DE, but I think he could be a Richard Seymour type dominant player at DE. I wasn't that excited about the options the Saints had for the draft before, but now I'm pumped for all the possibilities. I agree with the person that said Jordan, Jessie Williams, and Hicks up front. Other options in the first round or Minter, Teo, Vaccaro, and any one of the many pass rushing OLB's available. My friends and I said all year that this defense was more built for a 3-4.

Broughton, Braylon -stays DE
Jordan, Cameron -starter DE (could be great here)
McBride, Turk -stays for Depth maybe DE
Hicks, Akiem -starter DE (could also play NT)
Johnson, Tom -stays DE

Bunkley, Brodrick -starter NT
Walker, Tyrunn -NT if puts on a little weight
Ellis, Sedrick -gone, no stays, uh depth, probably gone (not sure if he could handle NT only on the very cheap)

Galette, Junior -starter OLB
Wilson, Martez -starter OLB
Hawthorne, David -starter ILB
Lofton, Curtis -starter ILB
Casillas, Jonathan -stays depth
Vilma, Jonathan -stays depth
Johnson, Austin -depth

Richardson, Jay -Gone
Romeus, Greg -been gone
Smith, Will -gone
Chamberlain, Chris -gone
Herring, Will -gone
Humber, Ramon -gone
Shanle, Scott -gone

IMO

Was hoping Vilma would return but now don't see him at all in a 3-4.
Hicks is very young and still learning so I can't see the Saints putting him at nose right now plus I don't think he's ever even played the position

Smith seems to have the size and is a vet and if he took a big pay cut i could see at end some.
Lofton and thorn seem to be the ILB for now.

ANSWER: A safety who can't play pass coverage in a pass happy league and wiffs on tackles down field because he "shoulder-tackles" and doesn't use his arms. The same guy who blew coverages 2-3 times in the Seattle playoff loss 3 years ago and the SF playoff loss 2 years ago that were major factors in those losses. He can't play safety in a 4-3, so how the hell can he play safety in a 3-4? Oh yeah, the same guy we pay $5 MILLION DOLLARS a year for those qualities I've just listed.

QUESTION: Who is Roman Harper?

Vilma didnt like hte 3-4, but he had very good seasons in it with the Jets.

the thing is, someone like him, if he is going to play ILB, needs a top notch NT and we really dont have one at the moment. Im not going to say outright i think he is gone, but its a strong possibility if he doesnt restructure
