According to this he retired from the NFL as a player in 2001. It also says he was an assistant coach at western Kentucky from 1994 to 2001.

What gives?

Assistant coaching
During his final eight seasons in the NFL (1994–2001), Harbaugh was an NCAA-certified unpaid assistant coach under his father, Jack, at Western Kentucky University. Serving as an offensive consultant, he scouted and recruited high school student-athletes throughout several states including Florida, Indiana and Illinois. He was involved in recruiting 17 players on WKU's 2002 Division I-AA national champion team. His father was a football coach for 18 years, including 14 years as head coach at WKU.
Harbaugh was an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders in 2002–2003. In 2002 he was an offensive assistant coach, and in 2003 he was the quarterbacks coach.

Oh ok thanks, I had no idea someone could be considered an assistant coach but not even be on campus the majority of the time

I would figure recruiting for a college team as an active NFL player would be obviously against the rules.

Why is that exactly? Maybe if he was recruiting for Michigan during dead periods or something, but if he was listed as on the staff at WKU, why wouldn't be be allowed to recruit like any other assistant?

Slippery slope. Whats the difference between alma mater and any other school? (thats what they would say)

He was unpaid and just recruited for them. That would be like LSU having Shaq in his prime to go on the road recruiting for basketball for us. Or Patrick Peterson going to all the best DB's houses in the country and convincing them to go to LSU. What if Peyton Manning recruited for UT?

I just thought that was illegal.

He's actually on the staff at one.

If Shaq, PP7 and Peyton Manning were assitants for the staff, what would be the problem? I think there are limits to the amount of people you can have you can have on staff and if they are official staff members what's the problema?

What authority would the NCAA have to tell Shaq he can't talk to a HS kid about playing at LSU?

yeah there is a reason there are limited numbers on a coaching staff for NCAA sports. if they used one on him, then

also, being "involved in recruiting" may mean he just talked to coaches and developed relationships with schools while scouting

Maannn I don't know. I just figured it was illegal because teams don't do it.

I understand the limited staff rule, but I promise you we would be better off not paying Patrick Peterson and having him recruit for us than paying Ensminger to be lazy and do jack shite.

Is there an example of someone doing this other than a guy working for his dad at a small school he didn't attend preparing for his future career? I would think LSU and other big schools can afford to have a full staff of coaches and wouldn't waste one of those spots on an "unpaid assistant" that was a former player that is a now a star in the pros to gain some theoretical recruiting advantage.

No, and I was surprised by this.

Well I was only half-kidding about LSU, but I know there are at least some expendable positions.

There is a reason Ensminger went from OC at Texas A&M and Clemson to Wide Recievers coach at West Monroe. He is an average AT BEST recruiter and our Tight Ends have looked average AT BEST under his tutelage.

Even if all he does is BBQ, that's just an anecdotal example. Most big schools I'm sure would not waste a coaching spot to have a former player as an unpaid assistant to help recruit as an end around some NCAA restriction. And I don't think it would be that big of an advantage anyway.

You brought up the BBQ, not me . It might not be for a long haul, but say UT really, REALLY needed a QB and the #1 guy in the country is coming up next year. Why not ask Peyton (big time presence as an alum) to call him and make some in-home visits?

I am so bored at work if you can't tell

That may be against the rules, I don't know. In this case Harbabugh was apparently listed as a member of the staff.

Of course the schools no doubt point to these big time guys, a lot of them make no secrect they support their school, I just don't know that a kid is so impressionable that Peyton Manning calling up and saying "Hey you shoud go to Tennessee" will be the deciding factor
