Looking for a good CC handgun

So, it's time for a new gun purchase. I have about $550 to spend on a gun. I currently have a S&W 40 cal and would like to stay with that caliber due to ammo issues. I have considered a 9mm, but I don't know if I want to stock another caliber of ammo. I have also considered a hunting rifle because I don't have one yet, but I rarely hunt. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I'd go with the pistol, since if there is a ban, they'll most likely go before rifles. If you don't hunt a lot, chances are taht when you go, you're going with someone, and they'll let you borrow a rifle.

Not to get into your business - if we assume for the sake of argument the weapon you have is a Glock 22 (or 23), obviously, have you considered a Glock 27? If you prefer a more traditional platform, or your .40 S&W pistol is a Sig P226 or 229, then a Sig P239 comes in .40 S&W as well. (New, the Sig is probably well outside of your budget, but you might be able to find one in the used market at your price.)
I also hear great things about the Kahr PM-40 and the Smith M&P Shield. I think the Kahrs go for a little more than a Glock, but you're in the ballpark at $550.
Another option would be the H&K P2000 SK, but not a lot of places stock them and it could get pricey, as well.

My 40 cal that I have now is a S&W Sigma... I'm not stuck on a certain brand, however my S&W hasn't given me one problem in 15 years.

The first thing the OP needs to decide is if he wants to carry something single stack or double stack. A single stack handgun will be slimmer, more comfortable, easy to remove while still in the holster, and can fit a wider range of apparel. A double stack handgun will have more rounds and with the proper holster it can be comfortable, but when you strap this thing on, you're making a commitment to wear this gun/clothes combo for the rest of the day. Then again, all of these suggestions have to do with inside the waistband carry (IWB). Any other method will have other tradeoffs. This is a decision you'll have to make...
If you wish to go single stack, I have a Kahr CM9 and I love it. It is dimensionally identical to the PM9/PM40, but costs a couple hundred dollars less. If you wish to get the same caliber, I would go with the Kahr CM40. The M&P Shield 40 is also a great choice but finding one right now may be a bit difficult. Still, I recommend it.
For double stack handguns, I think the best compacts (^those up there are subcompacts^) are your basic 4 from well-known companies. This would include S&W, Springfield, Glock, and Ruger. I carry a Ruger SR9c daily and it is very comfortable in my White Hat holster. Dimensionally, this gun is about the same as an M&P40c, SR40c, Glock 21 (not positive of this number), and XD40 compact. There are slight variations with each one, but each one brings reliability, usability, and dependability to the table. The next question to answer would be: Which one feels best in your hand?
I would go to a gun store and feel each one and see what you think. Did you have any specific handguns in mind?

Not really. I was gonna look at the M&P's and the Glocks. The single stack vs. double stack is something I haven't thought about. Thanks for the insight... Definitely gonna check out some single stacks.
ETA - What's a Kahr CM40 go for?

For sure. You can get a Kahr CM40 for about $400 bucks and have money left over for ammo. I only single this one out because I love my CM9 so much. It's been shot somewhere around 4000-5000 times and just keeps ticking.
Either way, I think you'll be happy once you make a purchase. The smart thing is that you set your budget at $550. A lot of people are cheap when it comes to their lives and only want to spend $250 on a CC gun. It's best to get something good the first time than risk it failing when you really need it.

You need to decide the size of the piece you want to carry around. Once you've decided that, pick a caliber available in that size. You would be best off going to a store and trying some on.
