whats the word on these beasts? are they still being made? i almost pulled the trigger on acquisition a few years ago. it was a good thing i had a chance to shoot one before buying one since it has one nasty kick (shoot level III ammo).

Yes they still make them to the best of my knowledge.

i was seriously thinking about getting one a few years ago but the level 1 ammo ballistics are not as impressive as my .30-'06 and the level 3 ammo was flinch-inducing. buddy has a 7mm stw that can really reach out and touch something but the gun is too cumbersome in the deer blind and the ammo is hard to find and $$$ as all hell.

Unless you're shooting big horns in CO, or a glutton for punishment, I just don't see the need.

A .300 ultra mag will probably be just as cumbersome because of the long barrel and action.

that's the conclusion i came to. its damn near impossible to find an area where you will really be shooting deer at 200+ yards all the time.

I sighted one in for a friend. He bought the managed recoil ammo and it wasn't bad at all. I know it's not level 3 but he doesn't even hunt. It's one of those what if guns.....if I ever go Elk hunting I will have a gun for it. I laughed because the ammo box looks like a VHS tape.

I shoot a 300 win mag and an old lease partner of mine shot a 300 ultra mag.

Looking at the 2 bullets side by side really blows your mind. My 300 win mag is overkill already... but holy cow that ultra mag is a big arse round.

no such thing as overkill, only dead or not dead. 300 RUM is so unnecessary it's awe inspiring...buddy from college has one...killed a mule deer with it in Montana at over 500 yards...exit wound was the size of a coke bottle...a 2 liter coke bottle.

can I quote myself in sig quote, or is that in poor taste?

seriously, if I still had the pics of that exit wound I would post them (or send them to KR for him to post on my behalf)...it was unbelievable the carnage created by that round...pretty sure it was a 200 grain accubond... devastating to say the least...

the only thing i think that might be in the realm of comparing it to would be a crack barrel 3.5" 12 ga without a recoil pad.

I am rocking a 300 win mag with a custom muzzle break. The 300RUM makes it look like a 243 beside a 7 mag.

Next rifle will be a 300RUM. There was a damn good article about this round a couple of months ago in one of the long distance shooting magazines. Browning makes a "Long Range Hunter" or something like that; this is the Google Pull:
Browning Long Range Hunter.

Anyway, it is a hell of a gun if you have aspirations of hunting elk, moose, or anything in N.A.

Edit: I have a 7 STW too. 14.5 pounder.
The arse hat in the photo fluted his barrel. don't do this fyi.

Fluting: not a good idea. Shilen will void the warranty on any fluted barrel. Google it.

I thought fluting went out with Goth Rock.
