Probably a noob question but:

My son wants minecraft for Pc.

If I install it on my laptop, which is on its last leg, will I be able to transfer it to another computer if this one breaks.

Not too familiar with current computer licensing for games

Thanks

You create an account when you buy minecraft.

When you launch minecraft, there is a patcher where you have to log into your account.

Simple as that.

Its like most MMOs

You can download a client for free.

No license controls.

That is managed by having to log into an activated account.
