Marquee Moon has been on top 100 album lists since the 80s.
Villiage Green is as well but at the time of its initial release it was certainly out of step with the counterculture 60s. It celebrates and mythologized the past.

Not an album but a single worth mention on this thread. Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High.
Produced by Phil Spector, who was convinced it was a #1 the record was deemed too soulful for white radio and too white for black stations.
One of the all-time great singles.

Good God you've done it now. That album isn't hated enough. If Soundgarden or AiC put that album out, it probably wouldn't have sucked nearly as bad because those bands could pull that off. The problem with Load is, is that Metallica wanted to make a record that they were completely incapable of making. It just wasn't in their DNA. The whole thing is a collection of songs in styles that they enjoyed, but had no business writing. Awful.
Props to you for standing by it. You've got balls. I like balls.

I think Pinkerton pretty much personifies this thread. Everyone gives it five stars now, as it deserves, but everyone hated it when it came out. Critics, fans, even Rivers Cuomo hated it.
Many albums that followed a band's "great" album fall into this category. They are always seen as inferior if they follow a "classic" no matter if on its own it's still a great record.
Green Day's Insomniac jumps to the front of my mind.

for me, it was nirvana's in utero. it was still loved but not as much as nevermind.
even upon my 1st listen in didn't like save for a couple of songs and the more i listened the more i like it. same with superunknown after badmotorfinger with soundgarden

Tool - "10,000 Days" album
This will get a lot of flack, but here's why I list it. I'm a huge Tool fan. Most Tool fans hated this album compared to Tool's 90s work.
However, the more you listen to it, the more brilliant it is.
In fact, I spent about 4 months listening to nothing but "Rosetta Stoned" on repeat. I'm now convinced that "Rosetta Stoned" is one of the most epic songs ever made and in my opinion it's Tool's best.
Therefore...I went from thinking that 10,000 Days was Tool's weakest album (though, to put this into persepective, if it was released by any other band, it would be epic) to thinking that certain parts of 10,000 Days is Tool's greatest accomplishment to date.

Oh I know the album well. Lost keys, blame Hoffman setting the narrative. It's just been a while since I heard it. I agree that Rossetta Stoned is the highlight of the album.
I just feel that Eulogy is probably the best song ever recorded. By anyone.

My album is Slayer's Divine Intervention. It's their first with Lombardo on the drums and a lot of fans aren't fond of it. I absolutely love it. I think it's better than Reign in Blood, which IMO is a bunch of filler bookended by greatness.
