No it's not. When you look at these other names close enough (ignore the history behind some of them and just look at them for what they are) many of them are much worse than the Pelicans. Once people get used to the nicknames and they become more familiar, they seem to forget how crappy the name actually is. Like Fun Bunch said in the other thread, there's a team whose mascot is a sock. A FRICKEN SOCK. Think about it.

I think you may be right about the history aspect. It's easier to accept those names because I am used to them but even as I try to take history away, I still prefer most to Pelicans. I mean it is just a really bad name. I would rather a generic name like Hawks or a nonsensical name like Lakers then a name that is unique but sucks. I put Pelicans against other bad names and its just still sucks. Pelicans < Wizard, Magic, etc.

I'm sure there is some solid reasoning in there somewhere. Please, explain.

Its not rocket science or anything. Its just a matter of personal opinion and preference. I try to place myself cheering for my team and find it much more silly and disheartening saying lets go Pelicans over other names. To me it doesn't ring right. It just sounds like something that should be mocked and unsurprisingly it is. Not to say that that means anything. Please explain why you feel like its your duty to antagonize me because I don't like the name.

It's nothing I can quantify! It just sucks! Therefore I am right!

That about cover it.

Now I'm going to take in a Browns/Packers game...

It nothing to be right about. It is my opinion that the name sucks. I don't have to quantify my opinion of why I think the name sucks anymore than you have to quantify why you don't like certain foods. You may not like a certain food because of the taste, I don't like Pelicans because I think its sounds lame. I'm not here to be right or change anyone's opinion on the matter, only to voice my dislike of the name just as others will voice their pleasure in the name. I'm not going around asking everyone who likes the name why they like it or the quantify why the name doesn't suck.

Fun Bunch is apparently incapable of coping with differing opinion this week.

By the way, he likes it because it's "unique" and "fun." Totally quantifiable.

How has Hornets not been mentioned? It sounds like a crappy minor league baseball name.

Has anyone noticed that just about ALL of the names in pro sports sound horrible? That's because they are. The thing that makes them seem better is the history associated with them. You associate other things along with the names when you hear them. The newer the name the worse it seems.

Color scheme and design is the most important thing.

If I could have my way teams wouldn't go by mascot names, we'd be like European soccer clubs. I'd feel more pride in cheering for New Orleans than for the Saints/Hornets/Pelicans/etc.

This should make everyone more appreciative of the new name. It also shows how people will get over it in time because, well, they somehow got over these abominations.

Thats a good point. It doesn't matter what the mascot is. People are going to get over it in time. It's all subjective anyway.
