Why not? The Russians entertained the idea.

General stubbornness. I'm being convinced pretty easily that it's a good idea. The argument you are making, I have 3 friends making as well. It is a cheap conversion that allows for significantly more optics options.

Nope, it is basically an M44.

Bending the bolt handle is definitely the way to go. It makes sense in every way for a hunting rifle.

I don't know the model, the groom who is giving it to me is on his honeymoon, so I can't see it again for a week. I'll update the OP when I find out. As to the bent bolt discussion, I've found several bent bolt kits I like. I'm going to do that and open up the optics options. As was stated. If I'm worried about historical significance, I can buy another one.

Edit: Based off of pictures, I think 91/30.

From my research on the bent bolt, it's not a novice job. Should probably have a gunsmith do it.

I would have a gunsmith do that, mount the optics, and zero it in for me.

Good deal. It's not hard to bend the bolt if you know how to weld, but you definitely want a smith to do any drilling and tapping for mounts because that shite has to be PERFECT

The Moison has a floating boat head to a certain degree and most bolts will headspace on most rifles. The best thing to do if you really want to do it, is just buy you a seperate and new bolt with a bent handle.

If you want the one you have bent, go to gunboards.com and there is an add for Jim the Boltman. Click on it. He specializes in bending Moisen bolts and they look really nice. Pretty much original. I think they run around $50.

M38 is a carbine and was not issued with a scope. The M44 is an M38 with a folding bayonet attached. The M91/30 is the long rifle and the sniper optics was fitted to those. The scope was mounted high off of the receiver a s the bolt did not interfere. They are fun, loud, And will work your shoulder real well. You will enjoy it.
