You're probably right.
This is a case of everyone as an adult sort of re-imagining who they rooted for back then...and wrongly picking Tom.
But as a child, Tom probably seemed like the scary bully and we probably thought Jerry was funny and wanted him to live.
Now we want him to die.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who hated Jerry. I always wanted Tom to eat that little bastard.
