I have problems with Coach Jones in this whole Forrest resume situation assuming it is true.
Do You think Jones, who has had Forrest under him for 5+ years as his assistant, pretty much his right hand man and ace recruiter, didn't know anything about this bullshite on his resume?
No way he didnt know his resume was BS IMO,

I would think that it is university human resources who verify resume data. I doubt that the head coaches are involved at this level of detail. Damn shame to lose him from a job that doesn't require a master's degree.

This! Not the head coaches job to do a back ground check on a prospective coach's resume. That is why all university have a HR department.

Not only is Johnny not at fault, but he should be super pissed off. He finally gets his dream job and the last thing he would want is to get ensnared in some academic dishonesty incident.
There is no chance he knew about this.
As has been pointed out, a master's degree is not required, so there was really no reason to verify it. When Johnny hired Forrest from Arkansas State, he was not a huge name and JJ would not have hired him had he known. Would not have been worth the risk.
