Which fricks that 4th year completely.

It does. And, it forces the same moves with other players on the roster.

But you are conflating that with the contract being larger than 3 yr/ 100M.

The Saints will make those 3 years a little cheaper at the expense of year 4 and perhaps year 5.

It's just kicking the can unless the player takes a pay cut. We are accumulating insane levels of future dead cap hits. Every restructure (especially if void years are used) adds future dead cap that robs future years of cap space.

It appears NFL GM’s disagree with your opinions.

Which is why restructures are common practice.

Restructures are common, but not when you're in the situation the Saints are.

As I posted in another thread:

quote:

We are already $84M over the estimated 2024 cap (per Sportstrac) with all of the restructuring.

Looks like Jameis (assuming post June 1 cut) is 8.4M in dead money. Michael Thomas will be 14M in dead money (per Sportrac) almost guaranteed. That's about 10% of our 2024 cap gone with those 2.

Then you have Cam Jordan (when he's not under contract) eating up another $12.7M of the cap. Now you're up to $35.3M in dead money.

If we cut Peat this year and designate it as a post June 1 cut, that adds about $10M in dead money to 2024.

Then we'd be up to about $45M in dead money for 2024. That's over 20% of our cap

That ain't good.

i felt like we were so close to fixing our Cap issue.

...but somehow we managed to make it even worse.

If we were smart and ate some shite for about 2 years we would be done.

That's not "tanking" or "trying to get the #1 pick" or anything. We'd be about where we are...in the mid-tier of NFL teams with a shot of the playoffs.

The thing is they plan for those situations.

Harley knows about the cap 3 years out. I don't love the way they do business, but it has to be done this way.

Actually it’s a 2yr/$70 million deal bc the $10 million roster bonus in year 3 guarantees in 2024 but the year 3 salary doesn’t guarantee until March 2025 and year 4 salary isn’t guaranteed at all

It's not though. The 5th year already has a $5.7M cap hit, per sportstrac

So a void year Hmmm

But, that would not affect the fact that it is still a potential 3yr/$100M because that $5.7M would be included in the $11.4M if they walk after 2026. Of course, as you point out Loomis will restructure and push more money into 2026 and beyond making that dead cap higher if they separate. But, wouldn't that essentially make it a 4 year/$100M deal? He'd have his $28.5M signing bonus, his 2023 base salary of $1.5M, the $30M for 2024 that will be partially base and bonus, then the same in 2025 but with a $10M roster bonus. If he opts out in 2026, the team then eats whatever ML kicked down the road plus the $11.4M and he's on the books for 4 years (with the team needing a new QB)

They have a plan to get under

There is no plan to maximize a roster when 20-25% of your cap is dead money.

You can field a roster but it's ceiling will be capped

I miscalculated the guarantees. Those were more clear later when more detail was released

That was the main point anyway.

You guys need to stop thinking of dead cap money as some kind of handcuff. It’s all a fugazi. It’s just a fancy accounting tool that always works. The cap goes up and contracts inflate every season so the dead cap money from this contract will be child’s play come 2026-27.

Incorrect. Tom Brady restructured with the Bucs last year.

Restructures are especially common with high paid players and teams in need of cap space. Like Tampa and the saints.

Lets just admit that you are no expert and move on

Issue is is this really going to be the only dead contract money out of 54 players in 2026-27?

What team would not restructure a Tom Brady?
How many teams would for a Carr? I only know one

When you have an elite QB you have an open SB window and it makes sense to extend. After he retired they went cheap with Mayfield on a 1 year deal and still beat out the Saints

Yea, no.

Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff are closer to the top 10 than Carr is. He’s not bottom 5 like many like to claim, but he’s around 20.

In other words, mediocre. Not a guy that’s going to lead this team as it’s presently constructed to a Super Bowl.
