AirDrop eludes censorship/monitoring systems because, if I understand this right, AirDropped transmissions go phone-to-phone, like walkie-talkies, without having to first go to through a cell tower or the internet.

Users had no idea they'd be crippling one of the few tools they had to communicate without state monitoring when they accepted the update.

Now you also have the EU threatening Twitter because of their change in moderating. Twitter might allow things to be published that goes against the EU laws on hate speech and misinformation.
The EU sounds like China, and the WH sounds like China as well. The govts are tooling up and gathering power over social media, media in general, to thwart any speech that counters the govts.
