I will never feel sorry for this level of stupidity.

You never walk up behind a horse

I did grow up around horses and that is not how I was taught.

If you have to come up behind a horse, you come close enough to make sure it can’t wind up.

oh shut up. You never walk up (or anything else for that matter) behind a horse with which you aren’t familiar.
I’ve never owned a horse I couldn’t walk behind, around, on the side of or any place else for that matter. Of course i would never try to do that Stupid shite he did either.
He got exactly what he deserved.

I worked at a stable when I was in my early teens and I trusted all but one of the horses… until I was in the metal stable with one of the best horses and lighting struck a tree maybe 50 ft from the doors. I thought that horse was going to kill me. I never stood near the back half of a horse again even though it didn’t actually kick me, but it bucking wildly outside of the stall was scary.

He’s lucky. It looks like he caught the back of the horse’s right leg to his right thigh.

A hoof to the head or nuts would be a much worse outcome.

Saw my old man do that more than once when I was a kid, without getting the shite kicked out of him.

The stuntmen who could do that kind of stuff for old Hollywood westerns were real old timey cowboys. It's not something you just decide to try.

Thats funny. We have had horses we could do that with in a quick mount - basically leap frog into the saddle. The key is they need to know you are coming. He startled his horse and paid the price.

For ours, we had a soft whistle for them to know we were coming.

False, you always mount a POORLY trained horse from the left side. Horses can be trained to mount from either side, in fact our calf roping horses are mounted and dismounted from both sides every day.

I know, it’s really just tradition. The horse doesn’t care.
