Houston/Texas Outdoors intro

I moved from Louisiana to Houston and now that things are getting settled and dove season is around the corner I’m thinking about my plans. Then I realized how much I feel like a fish out of water here. Don’t know where to fish/hunt…nothing. I was trying to find a simple sporting clay course and not even sure that’s readily available if you’re not a member.
Any advice for getting started as an outdoorsman. Some specifics:
- I need a solid skeet and clay sporting range that I don’t need a membership. Obviously rifle/pistol range would be a plus.
- Any pleasant Texas outdoor forums to gain insight?
- Any oddities that make TX different than LA?
ETA: not looking for any hand outs on honey holes or something. I know it’s going to be a bit of trying this or that and interacting with other outdoorsmen. Just thinking through how others approached it when moving to a new state.

Is Carters country still open? They had a skeet setup the last time I was in Houston for a meeting.

there is a reason louisiana is called the sportsmans paradise and texas isnt
it will definitely take getting used to

I quit hunting when I moved to Dallas in 1984. I had never paid to go hunting back then, and wasn't going to start. I grew up in small towns, when most everyone let others hunt on their land.
I know that nobody hunts for free anymore. You either have to buy, or lease land, or pay to be in a club. Maybe it won't be so different in 2022.

I believe Baileys has a skeet range and I know American Shooting center does. Houston Gun Club would e the place to go but I think it’s a members only deal. I live on southwest side so don’t know anything about the north side as far as that goes.

I was amazed that you can still drive on the beach in Texas but in Louisiana you are destroying the beach. I bet a 1000 cars doing donuts doesn't do as much damage as a tropical storm

Well hello friend, I was about to make this same post. Where are you located in Houston? I have a very nice range and skeet course 10min from the house. We just got settled as well.

If you want to fish
Take a day and go drive the blue water highway in surfside beach, there used to be several access points to Christmas Bay from it. Do a google maps Surfside beach (San Louis Pass) and look towards the Galveston end at Cold Pass
I've been gone a while and things have changes but if you can find a way to walk into Christmas Bay you can catch fish
We used to fish live shrimp under a popping cork "wading" in it and catch flounder/reds/specks. I had no boat
Also on the beach side when the blue water pushes in you can catch trout.
The surfside jetty could be a place to start

Blackwood gun club in Conroe has a couple really good sporting clay courses. You don’t need to be a member to shoot there, but it does make it cheaper.

American Shooting Center near Hwy 6 and Westheimer inside the park. Has Trap Skeet and Sporting Clays along with pistol and rifle ranges.

Carters country for a non membership range. Also, check out the website 2coolfishing.com as they have several hunting boards as well.
