Going to Playa Del Carmen in September. When is the best time to book flights, will have to be American bc we have flight credits with them that expire in October, but right now the credits aren't enough to cover the cost. Will prices go down possibly?

Good morning. So watching airfare has been interesting over the past few months given the large increase in people flying and the price of jet fuel also increasing. I've been noticing if you're flying one of the busier routes then you've got to book 2-3 months in advance. For less busy routes, it's actually getting cheaper the closer you get up to the last week or two. Examples- Flying Ft Lauderdale to NYC yesterday, price increased over the last 2 months since I booked it. This coming Wednesday, Newark to Seattle is now actually cheaper (less than 5 days out) than when I booked it 2 months ago.
So for September, I'd expect prices will go down from now especially given kids are in school. But we don't know what will happen to the jet fuel price in the upcoming months. If you see a price you're comfortable with, I'd book it. Right now just picking a few dates, looks like $336 roundtrip on AA from MSY or $346 from Baton Rouge. I don't think that's bad. You will also probably get a few schedule changes between now and then and will be able to rebook to flights you want.
