We’re considering going to San Francisco area for a family trip (youngest is 15) this summer.
I went as a kid and it was awesome. Any recs now? Homeless and poo on the street as bad as the OT would say?

SF is still a top 5 US city. If you’re trying to bang heroin in the Tenderloin, then you might have a bad time. Otherwise the homeless/drug issue isn’t any worse than NYC or Chicago. I feel much safer in SF than I do in New Orleans (but that doesn’t mean a whole lot)

One of my favorite cities. We stay at the Orchard Hotel at Union Square near the Powell Street Trolley Line. European boutique hotel, but young adult friendly. Great location at a reasonable cost with good size rooms. Took our kids (now adults) when they were about your kids age.
Buy a City Pass for everyone so that trolleys, buses and Muni rail lines are free and it includes pass to Alcatraz, take the Blue & Gold boat to tour Alcatraz, walk or ride bikes across the Golden Gate bridge, walk around Fisherman's Wharf, eat at the House of Prime Rib (best prime rib I have ever eaten, very young adult friendly), eat at the Tadich Grill (oldest cointiuouse run restaurant in San Fran), take a tour of Oracle Park, take a day trip to Muir Woods (if you are renting a car), have dinner or drinks at Top of the Mark, eat silver dollar pancakes for breakfast at Sears Restaurant, walk through Chinatown, to the Zoo and its Gardens and go to Ghirardelli. Weather is almost always in the mid 50's year round. Can get chilly with the winds and near the Bay. Hope this helps. Enjoy.

One of my favorites cities and there a lot to do. Take the cable car from the wharf to the Fairmont and have a drink, walk the Filbert Steps to the Coit Tower, Pizza in North Beach, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, Sausalito, Muir Woods etc. as the list is long and the restaurants are plenty. Use Uber or cable cars cause that city is really hilly and will wear you out. I have not been in a few years but my memories are nothing but great. Enjoy

we spent most of our time in the haight but those are our people, it may not appeal to you as much but it’s fun anyway. Chinatown is a must.
have fun SF is great, a world class city

Like most political narratives today, the idea that these cities are not safe is false. Don't do anything stupid and you will be fine

Not just Tenderloin. Mission and part of SoMa (near 7th and Mission) is chalked with drug addicts and homeless.
As someone who lives in Chicago, and frequently travels to SF for work, it’s much worse in SF… Honestly, it’s not even close.

The homeless situation in San Francisco is way worse than Chicago and even NYC and has been for decades.

Had a blast with our family . Colder in June then I expected . Giants game , Sausalito , Napa and Sonoma ,and Americas cup . Alcatraz was great and Chinatown . Pace yourself . I didn't even know about the America's cup until I saw a bunch of cool boats racing around Alcatraz ?
