Hawaii Governor Expects to Implement Booster Requirement to Avoid Traveler Quarantine

Changes to Hawaii COVID Travel Policy Coming Soon
quote:
According to KHNL, Gov. David Ige confirmed a booster shot will be necessary to be considered fully vaccinated and skip the traveler quarantine.
Under the current rule, any travelers from out of state only need two doses or a negative COVID-19 test to avoid isolating after their arrival.
An increasing number of government agencies are requiring a booster to be considered fully vaccinated — even though it hasn’t been officially required by the CDC.
The governor said an official change to Safe Travels is at least two weeks away, so people are given ample notice and can adjust accordingly.
“We know that the community needs time to react to that, so we would have to provide at least two weeks for those who may not be up to date to go to have the opportunity to go and get vaccinated if they need to,” Ige said Monday.
Ige said he is also talking with county mayors about requiring boosters for access to restaurants and events, but added the decision rests with them.
He adds that he would be willing to step in and issue a statewide order to require that in the event Hawaii’s hospitals and medical care system becomes overrun.
Going to Hawaii in 1.5 weeks, Governor says changes are at least two weeks away...not boostered.
Should be interesting to see how this all plays out timeline wise.

Having been to Hawaii this past year...
Get the booster. If you really want to go and not have your trip you're paying a bunch of money for to get ruined, just do it.
hawaii will look for ANY excuse to frick you over. Don't give it to them.

Governor has to announce it formally, then the State will give two weeks to comply.
I'm not getting a fricking booster for something that doesn't even prevent transmission of the virus. I have already been vaccinated and got COVID at the end of October/beginning of November.
From what I've read so far...Governor will announce it formally, then it will take two weeks after that announcement. I think I'm in the clear (if not I'll just get tested to avoid quarantine), but I wanted to make others aware of the change if they decide.

What Island are you going to?
Maui restaurants are already requiring booster I think.

Big Island.
Maui is going to require boosters, but they have pushed it back till February before starting the booster requirement for indoor dining and events.

I have a June trip scheduled but I’m just going to cancel. Hawaii isn’t even close to being worth being coerced into a booster that offers a negligible amount of protection against the virus. At some point the coercive nature of this thing is a deal killer. For me that time is now.imma just go back to Costa Rica or do some mainland domestic trips.

yeah this is the last time I'm heading to Hawaii for a good bit. Taking two elderly family members that have been through a lot within the last two years (one lost house in house fire, another dealt with an incredibly fricked up family situation). Neither have been to Hawaii in their life and after going to Hawaii in 2019, I feel like I should give them their best chance at seeing the Island before its too late.

We are scheduled to leave for Hawaii on Saturday. I’m ready to cancel.
If I fly to a mainland spot and am prevented from flying home, I can rent a car to get back. I’m not that good of a swimmer.

you should be good if you are leaving this Saturday.
Governor still hasn't announced anything formally and after he does it will take at least two weeks for anything to come into order.
One of the elders I'm with (who is unboostered, but vaccinated + Delta) was worried about getting stuck in Hawaii, but you don't have to go through the same process leaving as you do coming into Hawaii.

Lol at the cowardly anonymous Fundamentalist Covidian down voter. Covid Karen hates when you throw shade at her latest booster push.

Frick Hawaii, don't go. Plenty other places as nice or nicer, cheaper, with no Vax bs to deal with.

The Safe Travels process was clear as mud. Age 5-18 have to have negative test regardless of vaccine and the negative test has to be on an official Hawaiian form
We got pre-cleared in SF with wristband and didnt have to stand in any screening lines.
Once you’re here, there’s not a lot of mask nazis. Water is still blue.

End of January I think, but I still havent seen anything official yet.

ETA: seems like a bunch of news articles that just rehashed the same information from last weeks news stories.
Maui's starts on January 24. But no word yet on the entire State.

Ige also said he was speaking with mayors and other local leaders about requiring booster shots to dine in restaurants and participate in other activities and events. However, he said he will leave that decision up to individual counties.
Last month, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino revealed booster shots would be required for locals to be considered fully vaccinated.
The rule was supposed to go into effect on Jan. 8 but was delayed until Jan. 24 so people have time to schedule booster shots, reported KHON 2.
On the bright side you won't have to fill out the paperwork anymore

This move comes as the Hawaii Tourism Authority announced the Safe Travels program would be undergoing several changes, including reducing the mandatory quarantine period for unvaccinated travelers without a negative COVID-19 test from 10 days to five days, in accordance with updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
Additionally, visitors will no longer be required to fill out an online questionnaire 24 hours before arrival to receive a QR code.
