I've never understood this either. It's a PITA to get them up there, a bigger PITA to get them out when they go bad----and they will go bad eventually.

The damage to ceilings, furniture, flooring is a real thing, even with an overflow pan under them.

Just makes no sense to me. A 50 gallon water heater will take up about a 3 ft. x 3 ft. area in a house, so you're not saving a ton of space by putting the up in an attic.

A couple of years ago, I removed my existing attic stairs and replaced them with wide attic stairs, just for this reason when the time came.

Most water heaters will have problems fitting through standard attic stairs.

I don't understand why people think plumbers need to do this. It's not really that hard of a job. Especially if you're using shark bite fittings.

I'm with you on this, but in reality, most people (men) don't possess the necessary skills, or better yet, trust in their skills to be able to pull this off without thinking they did something wrong and their house will flood while they are out.

They'd rather pay a pro and have peace of mind than fret over whether they did it right and have it leak.

I'm a firm believer in DIY but firmly believe there are two types men out there. Ones who can do the work themselves and those that prefer to write the checks for someone else to do it for them.

When I decided to run a gas service to my 40 year old house, I installed the 70+ ft of black iron gas pipe myself, bought a gauge and pressure tested for two days. I needed a plumber to pull a permit for Entergy to put in the meter. Called my bro in laws guy and he came out, took my gauge off put his on and came back the next day and charged $400.
