The procedure was to cut into the perineum (the area immediately behind the scrotum and in front of the anus) (AKA the taint/grundle) with a knife and thence through the prostate into the bladder with a gorget, a pointed, sharp instrument designed for this purpose. The stones were removed with forceps or a scoop.

I got a better idea...

That sounds as bad as Al Swearingen’s kidney stone procedure.

Exactly what I thought about.

But didn't the doc simply jam forceps up Al's pee hole into his bladder to pull the stone out? Painful as frick but mild compared to President Polk's Procedure.

By modern standards, the operation was a terrifying procedure. It occurred under whatever sedation was obtainable from brandy. Jim's legs were held high in the air and being restrained by straps and assistants, the operation was done as quickly as possible. The procedure was to cut into the perineum (the area immediately behind the scrotum and in front of the anus) (AKA the taint/grundle) with a knife and thence through the prostate into the bladder with a gorget, a pointed, sharp instrument designed for this purpose

What an idiotic way to get to the bladder. Jesus. Didn't they try on a cadaver first?

So I went down the rabbit hole on this. The surgeon was a medical pioneer himself and basically invented several surgical procedures while practicing medicine under frontier conditions. In a biographical sketch it states that Polk walked out after the operation under his own power, with the stone in his pocket. He performed the first ever operation for an ovarian tumor, removing the 22 lb tumor through a 9 inch incision, again without anesthesia. Meanwhile the woman's relatives were gathered outside waiting to lynch him if she died. Three days later she was up doing housework. People were tough AF in those days

They had laudanum. I would take that over brandy if I was going to get sliced open.

As influential Presidents go, Polk is severely underrated. When he was elected he said he would only serve one term...and he did. He wanted to fulfill US Manifest Destiny and he did. Brought Texas into the Union, kick out Mexico from territory North of the Rio Grande...Mexican/ American War that ultimately got us the American Southwest and ultimately California
