I'll be in Ft Lauderdale the end of this month and I want to go to a Florida Panthers game. I've never been to a hockey game in my life. Is it worth extra money to sit closer to the ice?

Depends on how much more and how much closer, but in general the answer is yes. But you’ll enjoy the atmosphere regardless of your seats.

Upper bowls in modern arenas are worthless. Most have a lower bowl, then maybe one or two levels of suites before the upper bowl starts, so even if you are in row 1 you're two stories above the LAST row in the lower bowl, not to mention further back.
Just checked, and that IS the layout at FLA Live Arena (formerly BB&T Center):
We caught a St. Louis Blues game during the holiday break; sat in the lower bowl just inside the corner, row Q (17) and it was great. About $100 each for the tix.

Also if you have no team to root for in a game, sit on the side that the home goalie is at twice, cheaper seats.

Sit lower bowl and ~15 rows up if you want to actually see what is happening. I took my kids to the Preds-Yotes game last weekend and our seats were 8th row and it was hard to see well. Once we moved back several rows we were above the glass and could see much better.

I'm going against the grain here.
When I attended Thrasher games, I liked to sit behind the goal and in the upper deck as close to the start of it as possible. For me, it allowed me to watch the play develop and how the players moved without the puck. A great way to watch the game.

Sitting close to the ice will give you an appreciation of the speed that those guys are playing at - it's unreal.
Sitting higher in the bowl or even in the upper deck will let you actually see what is happening and see plays developing.
It's personal preference.
