January Weekend Getaway Near FLL, with Kid

We were supposed to spend next weekend (MLK weekend) in the Keys, but my husband is recovering from knee surgery and isn't quite ready to fly. I've been able to reschedule or refund all of our travel arrangements, except for our flights to FLL. I'm thinking that perhaps my daughter (age 12) and I will just fly down there for a laid-back weekend anyway, but I know nothing of that area.

What is within an Uber/Lyft ride of that airport? Is there a safe town/area where we could check in to a beachfront hotel and be within walking distance of restaurants, etc.? (I already cancelled our rental car, but I suppose I could rent another if it would help.)
