I currently have Polk TSI floor speakers and a polk subwoofer with Yamaha receiver. We have YTTV and I am just not happy with the output and sound. Is there any advantage going to a soundbar or something else for primary watching sports/football?

Answer is probably no..

However some devices now support 5.1 Dolby, but this is more due to with what device you are using to stream with.

It's not your receiver or speakers. A soundbar won't help. YTTV pretty much only plays everything in Stereo sound so you'll never get 5.1 since the source isn't sending it.

Advantage to soundbar: smaller
Drawback: worse sound

YTTV been slow rolling that 5.1 rollout for a long time too. Brutal.

What mode do you have the Yamaha set to for sound output? You should have it set at stereo pair plus a sub in the setup menu.

I'm embarrassed to say I had the two floor speakers set to Large which cuts out the sub output. After finally researching this issue I got it working. Now just trying to decide if I need a center channel for mainly sports watching or stick to the two towers and sub setup.
