No one has signed anything and there is no deal done despite message board rumors you might read here.

Top Candidates still in the mix, in this order:
1. Jimbo
2. Riley
3. Tucker (recent extension irrelevant)
4. Fickell, but probably not realistic. (I had heard only established P5 coaches were being considered but turns out that's not true)
5. Napier ("just outside the top group."
6. Aranda (picking up steam)

Jimbo has not said no yet, and Woodward is going to push until he gets an answer.

They believe Riley can be lured but there are obvious hurdles like his family being comfortable in Norman.

Saban really likes Mel Tucker which makes Woodward really like Mel Tucker. His recent extension is irrelevant and reportedly not finalized. Woodward believes Tucker is the next great coach to break through in the CFB ranks.

Fickell interest is cooling, as sources say he really is interested in waiting for Ohio State and very focused on making the playoffs right now

Napier is "squarely in the mix" but "just outside that top group." Woodward would need a few "no's." first. Sources say Napier would jump at the opportunity. He has a slight edge over Aranda.

Aranda is warming and not just because he beat Riley this weekend. Players love him, he's really building something and is super-detailed oriented. Tacking on the three this past weekend didn't go unnoticed and shows he's already thinking about what he needs to do to win championships. "Aranda is very much getting a look right now."

The NFL wild-card is Matt Rhule. He's on the list but "further down the pecking order." It would take "some other dominos dropping" before he was a serious candidate. Industry sources say they fully expect LSU's next coach to come from the current CFB ranks.

Cooling off:
Peterson
Franklin
Sark
O'brien

IMPORTANT: Woodward is interested in getting the right guy more than timing. The picture is bigger than this current recruiting class. Get the "right guy"
and everything else will fall into place.

Also, if someone isn't announced by early December it means our guy is coaching in the playoffs, and it won't be Saban, Kirby, or Cristobal. So you'll know without knowing.

edit: sorry hit post before I was finished

I think we can all take comfort in knowing that any selection of coaches from these lists will be a superior improvement from Coach O, not just from a coaching standpoint, but from all around management of a major college program.

Coach O got a taste of the success and immediately went awol

Is it bad that I want Aranda the most? I just believe in the guy so much.

The top 5 plus Cristobal being discounted outright confirms that Woodward wants someone with expertise on one side of the ball (we can disagree about whether the coach is truly good at the side they're experts on)

So we are looking at a coach because Saban, who is a rival coach, “likes him”? Yea Id recommend somebody shittier than me to be my opponent so I could beat their arse every year too! Thats just fricking dumb.

No Napier, he might be better than half of candidates.

Napier is on the list not sure why OP omitted him. Right after "Aranda" in the "Trending Up" section.

The 247 update on Riley was a lot more positive than I was expecting.

Basically saying that Woodward and many higher ups in the LSU AD are more than willing to make Riley the highest paid coach in CFB if that's what it takes to get him.

I appreciate the info, and it's always welcome.

But I have such a hard time believing that Woodward would let this much information about the search out. Unless of course he wants this exact information leaked. Throwing out that many names to appease the media so he can continue to work without interference

The article was not concrete at all, and was pulled together through sources close to the program and then sort of...guess work as to the order, though the sources seemed to agree on the top 3.

There's really not much concrete coming out.

Lol at Woodward if he really has Jimbo over Riley and Aranda. If this is truly the case, he is as simple-minded as everyone else currently overseeing football.

That’s a big if, but I would die on this hill.

Uh, that’s not how references work. Saban is the greatest college football coach of all time who is known for his work ethic, leadership and detail oriented-ness. He doesn’t just blindly praise people who worked for him. References are a mark of character so don’t take them lightly.
