Matt Campbell is a great coach for Iowa State (speaking as both an Iowa State and LSU Alum). He does what he does with underrated guys who he develops into some really fine ball players.
I don’t think his style would translate to the 4 and 5 star realm. He’s too much of a teacher and also discipline is huge, I mean huuuuuge with him.
He’s really set roots in Ames and I would be really surprised if he took another college job.

I'm curious how this is different than Saban, especially the teacher part.

It's interesting, but we're now going to hire a coach because his resume is similar to the pre-LSU resume of Saban? Couldn't we find a guy who had been a successful head coach at Texas A&M and Kentucky? You know, like Bear Bryant?
I'm kidding, at least partially. People keep saying Campbell would be a solid hire. Is that what we really want? A "solid" hire? I hope Woodward is after more than that.

I only did this because the Mel Tucker defender's favorite argument is that "well we got Saban from there!" It's a dumb argument, but I was curious which HC out there has a resume most like Saban's prior to coming to LSU, and Matt Campbell looked like a decent match just eyeballing it.

I don’t know. To be a Nick Saban one has to be an a-hole. I don’t know if Matt Campbell is an a-hole.

Campbell actually seems like a really good guy. You're right; nothing like Saban.

Yeah, everybody seems to believe Saban invented the "process," but it's been around in many ways for a very long time. Saban doesn't come up with it all on his own, he takes from business leader, coaches, sports psychologists, etc. Nothing about it is new, Saban just does it better than anyone else.
I think Saban's biggest factor in his success is his singular, constant, frenetic focus and drive. It's not normal in any way. I don't know if it really brings him fulfillment or happiness, but it's sure brought him a lot of championships.

Not saying I disagree. But who is that? Outside of the NFL,Saban,Kirby Smart or Ryan Day,I don't think that guy exists.

His post game interview was odd last week when he said,”…look at these people, they are happy with the win. Can’t we just be happy with the win.”
Of course I am paraphrasing, but that was the most NON Saban quote ever….by Nick himself.
Not trying to change the thread. Just thought it was odd. As you were.

Well a lot of the board (including myself) like Lincoln Riley as an option and Campbell has beaten him with less talent. I would say that’s another point for Campbell.

In early 2000 I had a conversation with a guy who was from Michigan. He told me LSU just hired a great coach. I couldn’t even remember his name for a few days when discussing Saban. I knew we beat him in Shreveport but that was it. This guy went on and on about him though as if he knew him personally and to this day is the only person who really acted like he knew it was a great hire. But he told me then that Saban just needed an administration that would let him have some voice and a place he could recruit. He was right.
It’s a different world now. In 2000 you couldn’t even google that much information about Saban. There were dozens of message boards to read through so you really relied on the news and word of mouth. But there isn’t another Saban. There won’t be for a long time probably. There are a few good coaches out there we could get that will succeed but it takes an entire staff and culture to develop a real dynasty that our fans expect (unrealistic). Figuring out who the coordinators will be will mean a lot but recruiting record and talent development (NFL players) will go a long way. So that’s the data you should use to compare if any.

Really. I happen to have lived in Ames for 20+ years and know a lot of the "insiders" up there. I am basing that statement on what those who live next door to the Campbells are saying as well as folks who attend church with them.
People who are raising kids with the Campbells. Same as when I lived there and had the pleasure of getting to know coaches and the Pollards away from work. Hell, back in the day Johnny Orr and I would walk the neighborhood and drink a beer or five together about once a week in the summer.
Ames is a super small town in some ways.

campbell obviously has a vision for the program and eveyrthing around it. would be a great hire.
personally i have him in the 2nd tier with napier, fleck, cristoball above aranda and kiffin but i know im in the minority there.
of course the majority think james franklin is better coach than Campbell and I think my thread about his stats without moorehead show that not to be the case.
