Can someone explain to me why we are having issues at the ports like I am 5?

Ive heard the following:
Well the Christmas rush......is this a new holiday?
Well so much is coming from chini.....is this new?
Well covid so people were not buying as much and now they are.....our GDP in the 2nd quarter was plus 17% versus year ago, highest ever, and we somehow got it offloaded, shipped, and sold.
Well covid restrictions are affecting movement of goods....we had far more restrictions earlier in the year without the problems
Seems like a "manufactured" problem at Cali ports, which I guess is a good thing since we dont manufacture anything in the US anymore
On a side note, as one poster noted (and the first thing my wife said) you can guarantee drugs will be flowing like wine as containers go unscanned during the rush. Some customs boys finna eat for the holidays, those kickbacks to look the other way will be huge.

As I understand it, they are short of dock workers. Biden wants the ports to be open 24/7 trying to clear the backlog. If they are already short, I don't think that's going to help the problem.

I don’t really know why the shortage of truck drivers? They don’t seem like the type to sit at home and collect unemployment.

Those aren’t people to him, they are “workers”, they should just work 24/7, until they are replaced by machines or won’t take whatever medicine he dictates..then they should be discarded like trash

I forgot that one. But somehow for a millennium these same ports have ramped up production by 30% to handle the holiday rush.
They have a contingency plan. If it goes up by X % you do A, if it goes up by another X % you do B....etc. You dont just stand around with your thumb up your arse and wish it away.

I’m guessing there are many variables involved…..shortage of labor to unload cargo, lack of trucks to move unloaded cargo, lack of space to unload new cargos.
Not to mention the bigger picture…..this administration (or whoever is making the decisions) literally wants to destroy America. They want to create so much chaos and misery so the people will demand that government fix all of our problems…..those people fail to realize it was the government that created the problems in the first place.

Most US manufacturers/ providers operate on “just in time” delivery of the constituent goods. That way, they do not have money tied up in inventory just sitting around and changes from consumer demand can be implemented quicker.
When the US shut down, there was no demand for the shipping and delivery to their facilities. However, overseas ( China, et al) were not as constrained.
Lots of “parts” were produced and loaded. Once the US economy opened back up-the items were ready to ship and lots of cargo arrived at one time ( like rush hour traffic).
Combine that with fewer workers and COVID restrictions and it ends up with this mess.
Simplified, obviously. But, in a nut sack.

Because Cali covid protocols limited workers at ports slowing production. Stimulus money, ie PPP, unemployment benefits increased buying power and demand. It took 1.5 years to get where we are and it will take months to get back to normal IF restrictions are lifted. Instead we have more people quitting/retiring due to forced mandates so there is no end in the foreseeable future.
