Les is NOT a gambler...

and he is not out of his mind. He simply understands better than any other coach in CFB that you have to trust your players to make plays in key situations. That's what enables him to continue to recruit top talent. Its also why his players prepare so well, because they KNOW that they will be called on to execute when it counts most.

I actually agree. It's just good coaching.
I remember when the Saints did an onside kick last year against the Cowboys. It's just a good call at the right moment. No one expected it.
The HB toss wasn't really a gamble either, IMO. It was just a nice looking play. And actually, I'm pretty sure Crowton is the one who made the call on the KW throw to Byrd.

Although I somewhat agree... I don't think that precludes him from being a gambler. He still takes chances more than just about any other coach...

making smart % plays doesn't make him a gambler
especially with how vanilla he wants our offense and defense to be for most of games

He has been unfairly portrayed as reckless. If you watch that Florida game last year, only 1 of the 5 4th down calls was questionable. As far as Auburn last year, Flynn almost screwed that up with his lack of urgencey.
The media jump on this, and has run with it ever since.

there are very few, if any, coaches who make that last touchdown pass. We're in easy fieldgoal range, first down, with one minute left. Run the ball, force auburn to burn all their timeouts, kick the field goal, and go home.
Damn right he's a gambler

"They call me the thread killer"
I think that he has convinced the players that he stands behind them and that he believes in them and their ability to make the play. Confidence and tenacity are successful traits to have in FB.

I think he just plays to win the game. He is not someone who plays "not to lose." The team is always razor sharp in the second half because they can't be complacent. I love the gadget plays and aggressive style because it makes football fun to watch and I am sure it makes it fun to play(especially when it works). Those types of games make players want to come and play for LSU!

Gambler or not, Les is a GREAT coach.
He has faith in his team. Can't fault a coach for that.

I agree and I have posted this exact thought last season. I do not know why the media is so hell bent on making him seem crazy. If Pete Carroll does something similar, then he just has the talent to pull off stunts. If Les Miles does it, it is just crazy.
I guess that they do not expect LSU to be as dominant as we are. I think that we bother them somehow. We offend their sense that USC can't be beat and that Notre Dame is NO LONGER a perennial powerhouse and that Ohio State does not have to be top 10 every year just cuz.

i'm a 20 year old LSU student who now lives afflicted with a heart condition. damn you miles. i love you so much, but i will die young because of you! one louisiana saturday night...in the student section catching a pass in the end zone with one second left to win the game...BAM! heart attack. dead.
high risk. high reward.

The best gamblers in the world don't get it right as often as Les does.
You're 100% right - Les just has the ability to feel the game and trust his players.
4 4th down conversions vs UF was not luck. It was bold confidence because your guys had been getting it done on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down. It was almost ridiculous not to trust the players.

I agree w/this SFP. You gamble when you ain't got shiite to begin with. We clearly had some moxie on the drive when KW threw the pass. We had the mojo when we onside kicked the ball. High % plays at that moment.

Gambler or not it is never boring. I am a 39 yr old LSU alumni and have come close to needing chest compressions on more than just a few occasions these last few years
The main problem is that as soon as the game is over I have to wait a whole friggin week to have it happen again. Why does the LSU football season ever have to end? Fickin AWESOME!!!

I think that you hit the nail on the head. When something upsets their ordered view - it has to be explained as something crazy or it would mean that they would have to really spend time and figure out how good or bad someone really is ( and that cuts into the lounging time

Do you think Les' reputation is the reason that Tubbs called a time out prior to one of our field goal attempts. Maybe he thought it was a fake.
