Daronte Jones' bend but don't break defensive philosophy was frustrating but worked.

Worked just enough.
I want to thank Mike Leach for his hubris. When we were set up in the 3-2-6 defense Mike rarely called inside runs. When he did MSU was very successful. MSU always had numbers running inside against LSU's defensive scheme. Running plays are much less risky than pass plays. I don't understand why Leach did not run inside more and force LSU to change their defensive personnel and formation then attack that defense with the pass.
I believe the bet that Daronte made was to increase the number of plays MSU would have to run on their offensive drives thereby increasing the chances of MSU mistakes. That philosophy paid dividends because we won the turnover battle.
It was frustrating to watch but the LSU defense kept everything in front of them and limited busted plays to only one play by MSU, wheel route to their RB for a TD.

The philosophy was a good one.
Our ability to play zone, recognize routes, and take advantage of 8 in coverage was damn poor. If Leach had run the ball on first down, we would have been in trouble.
They put Jay Ward at deep middle. He didn't make many plays. I woudl have thought that is what Burns would have done well.
Our LBs are a disaster in coverage. They literally gave up 7 yard checkdowns all day to try and keep from getting eaten up in the zone package. Frankly, it worked enough.

I mean it’s the defense big 12 and then pac 12 teams successfully deployed against leach for decades.
It was one of the main reasons for the pelini frustration last year. Washington played this exact defense against leaches Wazzou teams and held them under 20 consistently. Yet pelini and O didn’t bother to implement any of the concepts.
Then Odom ran it at Arkansas against State the week after we played them held them to under 20. Jones and O outright said after the game they just ran what Odom did last year. Leach doesn’t adjust. He runs what he runs.
Running the defense we did yesterday was base level competence from Jones and O.

LSU outcoached MSU. Plain and simple.

Against good passing teams the 3 rush 8 pass defenders works best in College and Pros. 2019 anyone remember?

We should have brought a few blind side cb blitzes on third and long.

I cant believe that people on here have been complaining about this after last year. The 20/20 hindsight after last year was that everyone plays zone, rushes 3, drops 8 on Leach. Granted we might have been more successful in defending some of the dump offs.

It was. The problem is, it is very specific to working against MSU. It won't fly against almost any other team we play. But I don't suspect you'll see it even close to as much either. It was a perfect game plan.

Wtf are you talking about? LSU executed EXACTLY what that defense was supposed to do almost flawlessly. Nearly ever pass was completed just a few yards down field and we swarmed to MSU. When MSU took shots we made plays. The defense, and coaching staff deserve praise for the effort yesterday.

I thought they should have run more as well, but that's not who they are. Running wouldn't have made a world of difference. They passed for 3-4 yards a pop most of the time. They could have run for the same.

This is a weak arse argument, and shows you have no clue what you are talking about. We GAVE the check down all day. It wasn't poor coverage, it was great execution of the defense we were running.

Down by 3 scores, he really had to give up on the run. If you recall, he didn’t start using it again until deep into the second scoring drive where things started looking more manageable time wise for MSU.
I thin Jones’ mistake was two fold. First, he went to prevent too early and Leach shredded it. Second, he stuck with it rather than getting back to what was working earlier. They never really got behind us, so to me the prevent was pointless after MSUs first TD against it.

Yep. The people on this board get dumber by the day.

Of course we would have. We would have gotten torched down the field though. We seldom played man, and when we did MSU kicked our arse. Luckily they suck, and a few passes were dropped and a few balls were thrown poorly. If we play man 50% of that game we lose, and probably lose big. It's 100% the reason we lost last year.

Good point. I think that is the one thing that I think was missing. On some downs, especially 3rd, it would have been nice to dictate a little with a corner blitz.

We could play man again and give up 700 yards

We rarely got in 3rd and long situations though. Sometimes when we did we switched to rushing 4 instead of 3. A corner blitz doesn't work at all against MSU. They get the ball out so fast there is zero shot that the corner can get there. It has to be third and really long, where they have no choice but to throw it down field. But then again, with no Stingley how much do you trust our DBs to cover. It was an unnecessary risk to really send anybody.

I think it’s one thing to give them the dump offs, but I thought we could have had the line backers shadow the back a little better. We did this better toward the end. They were getting 4 instead of 7. That makes a hell of a difference when you can’t stop 3rd and short.

It worked but ever so barely. It was too conservative.

But you do realize this opens the middle of the field up right? We would have been torched.

We played more man at the end. I'm not sure why though.

But we did stop 3rd and shorts. The way we played is difficult to stop on defense with a wide open field. We contained it very well though. Whenever MSU gets closer to their end zone, the defense we played makes it increasingly difficult for MSU to do anything. That's why you saw field goals, instead of TDs. We were very happy to trade FGs for TDs. It's Aranda defense 101.

The plan and schemes were a very nice example of good coaching. The execution waned late in the game but hats off to the staff on being flexible and tailoring an attack with your available personnel

He copied literally every other teams plan from last year against Leach. Nothing he did was innovative or took any brain. They copied what other teams have proven throughout history can stop Leech’s offenses.
Just because LSU was too stupid to do it last year does not mean Jones is a good DC now.
