FEMA assistance with losses not covered by insurance due to deductible

I have heard from a few people that because this is a major hurricane that I can petition to FEMA to cover repair costs that are not paid by my insurance after the deductible. Wondering if anyone knows anything about that or how to apply. I have a 15k hurricane deductible and need a roof. I know they are going to pay me slightly under 15k, so it will amount to me having to buy a new roof.

Can't offer any advice on the FEMA aspect, but that seems like a very high deductible. I believe my last roof replacement with Allstate was a $5000 deductible.

It is a high deductible. Have been fighting State Farm the last year over hail damage they refused to pay for. Was going to drop policy afterwards, but Ida had different plans.

What I learned about FEMA, after going through Laura, is that if you have house insurance they won't pay you a dime. Literally the first question they asked was do you have house insurance. Yes? Well call them. Meanwhile, irresponsible people who did not have insurance got paid. Not to mention those old friends from high school who don't work, don't own anything, got paid a few grand. Sickening.

I had a 5%(17.5K) named storm deductible when I was in LA and got hit by Laura. My roof damage amounted to about 5-6K. I filed with FEMA, promptly got rejected b/c I had insurance. Then I wrote a very simple letter appealing the decision and did the phone interview with the FEMA claims guy and received 8K for damages about 3 weeks later. Feel free to email me if you have any questions ODP1911 gmail.

FEMA is not a one-size fits all thing. They offer different programs. One of them is for home repair. What typically happens is they will refer you to SBA for a low interest loan to cover what insurance won't (i.e. your deductible). If SBA rejects you, then FEMA may give you a grant.
FEMA also has other programs like the rental program and immediate needs, etc, which they will pay to everyone, but if it turns out that your insurance covers some of those... FEMA will want their money back.
Part of the problem with the home repair program is that if you put on your application that you have insurance... you get a letter 5 min later in big print saying DENIED but if you read the fine print, really they are just saying settle with your insurer first, then give us a call and we can talk. But the DENIED in big letters catches people off guard. It's horrible PR.

I know SBA gave out loans after the floods that were forgiven. Hopefully they do that again. I think thats on Biden so i wouldn't count on it .

A lot of people complained after Laura that FEMA was a PITA to work with. Seems like Biden is more than willing to give away FEMA money now. Whereas Trump not so much. So maybe Biden would be willing to forgive loans.

Is the roof your only damage?
Posted on 9/9/21 at 8:09 am to stout
Roof is the major damage. I have several water spots that have formed throughout the house and several double pane windows that are fogged. I am assuming they will offer me between 15k and 20k for it all.

That sounds like more than $15K if you have the right person writing the estimate. I can possibly assist you.

Lots of carriers offer 2% or lower hurricane or named storm deductibles, so you don’t have to be stuck with a 5%. But who knows what’ll happen after 2020 hurricane season followed by 2021 leading off with a storm that may surpass Katrina on wind (homeowner) claim payouts

Thank God mine is only 2% because our insurance wrote our house off as a total loss.
Of course my dwelling coverage on my homeowners falls way short of my mortgage on the property so we'll be in a pretty big hole, especially by the time we pay to demolish the house and clear the property
Will need to sell the lot just to not come out behind. Applied for FEMA assistance is pending. My application says they will need to come out to inspect the property since my application says the house was destroyed, which it is.
Anyone familiar with what I can expect FEMA to cover in the event of a total loss where insurance coverage falls short?

Damn, that sucks.

They will likely first push you to an SBA loan. If you don't qualify for that, then they will give you a grant up to maybe 20K or so.
That's under normal circumstances. Perhaps given the size of this disaster, they will help more freely.
