I suspect inflated numbers. Either that are the mass population of ducks are staying on reserves to the north of us that hold water all year. Saw some amazing amounts of ducks in Arkansas last year in areas that noone could hunt. Either way, i'll be out there. My greedy self would hate to see a 3/30 - I look forward to duck season. Doesn't matter if i'm shooting limits everyday or scratching.

I've always heard that a young mallard can fly from Canada to a refuge in La and not get shot, and for the rest of its adult life remember exactly where that spot was where it could chill and avoid all the hunting. Most ducks are smart birds, it would be cool if they let you hunt certain unhuntable areas every other year or so. The one time I hunted in Irish bayou area, you could see non stop ducks flying to a no go hunting zone, and it was nearly impossible to even get them to look our way even a couple hundred yards away from the refuge.

There was a refuge halfway between Kaplan and Rayne on 700 that held un-godly numbers of ducks and geese in the 90’s. That whole area was leased heavily but rarely did anyone really kill birds hunting the perimeters. After the refuge lease was up blinds were leased on it and they shot plenty until the birds stopped coming.
Petijean farm on the north side of eye ten used to hold geese all season 89-95 and for no particular reason they stopped coming.

Now the Rayne sewage plant is a spoonbill refuge.

I don't doubt it. I saw some video the other day talking about all of the Canadian geese (and others) that would migrate down to La back in the day. I don't think I've ever seen a Canadian that wasn't a tame duck in La. Maybe 200 feet in the sky or something, but I found it interesting that they aren't as prevalent here anymore.
ETA: the video wasn't a flyway federation video or any sort of thing like that lol, it was some video about the history of south La duck hunting I came across.

One can only dream. Personally I'd be more than willing to endure a handful of 3/30 years to cut the number of hunters down some
I agree wholeheartedly with this!

3/30 would be a nightmare. A person can only hunt so many years in their life. Personally, i want as much opportunity as possible while I’m healthy and can hunt. Numbers of ducks don’t really matter to me. I believe that there will be the same amount of ducks in Louisiana regardless if its 3/30 vs 6/60. All studies that I’ve read upon show hunters have basically zero influence on population as a whole.

Correct. I think it is the height of selfishness to want to limit others hunting opportunities because they lack places to hunt or they are jealous of those who own or lease private land. Less hunters means less money for habitat and less support for hunting.

Short sighted mindset. If you think hunting is under attack now, wait until you loose what little participation and support $ we have.

it was fairly easy to see coming. so many blinds being hunted morning and afternoon. then people got more greedy and started leasing smaller parcels, as prices went up people split the blinds more ways and hunted more days. 717 comes to mind, people lined up both sides of the hwy within sight of one another's decoys. Then add to that the decrease in waste grain like red rice. LA should have done like missouri or arkansas and bought farm ground and made it refuge. IE laccesiene, but in greater qty

That refuge is now a cane field.

Both. Inflated numbers are a bigger deal than flooded corn
No till ag has made more food available during winter and probably helped shift the flyway some. Also Missouri's refuges have made an impact also
Our age counts down here show we aren't getting the young birds anymore

Add to the equation spinning wing decoys being known to be most effective on juvenile birds, especially in dry grain fields in Canada and the PPR. If they are dead, they ain't coming here.

Whats the word fellas? Anyone in SE La hunting this weekend?
Posted on 9/7/21 at 4:22 pm to OGhunter777
Headed to Maurepas swamp wma and will be in a kayak blind in King George Bay. Half dozen dekes and a pulsator. If they’re willing to play, so am I. Good luck to all going.

Yep - i will be in bayou black. Went ride yesterday. Our ponds werent very much affected by IDA - still tons of grass. Didn't see any teal, but i'll be out there regardless.

Anybody got any Delacroix reports? We plan to go blind Saturday (no reports on conditions or teal).

West of Houston:
Started seeing good numbers of Teal second week of August. They seem to be 7-10 days earlier than usual. As soon as we drop water on cut rice, the birds find it. Steadily building since then.

The drakes are migrating ahead of the cool front. Opening weekend should be a blast.
