Get an upper that comes with sights, a complete lower, a clipazine and a box of ammo and you an go shoot.

Ohh, I have plenty clipazines, and a few rounds of 223. I was handed down 1977 model Colt SP1 from my dad, but I've only taken it out to the range once. I've never broke it down to familiarize myself with the individual parts. I've always been more of a handgun and shotgun enthusiast. Never really got into the rifles, but I have always wanted to put together a more tactical style AR than the SP1. But dropping $1k+ on a rifle that will make its way out of the safe once or twice a year always deterred me from doing so.

You could just get an affordable, more tactical upper and collapsible stock (or not, I prefer the old style stock), to slap on your colt lower now and then, swap it right back. It's not hard.

I'd rather just leave the Colt as is, and build a second one. And with the info you all provided, I may move forward with that build. We shall see.

I'm just telling you, You don't have to change anything on the Colt Lower. You just pop the 2 pins, out change the upper. Pop the 2 pins again to put it back exactly the same. Takes all of 30 seconds each way.

Just buy a complete upper and a complete lower and literally snap them together

This. Or just buy a complete gun and shoot. If you want to tinker with AR building as a hobby then fine but if you just want to own and shoot, just buy one.

Can I get a clarification on this?

My understanding is, it's financially cheaper to buy uppers and lowers separate, than to buy a complete gun. I believe the Feds tax it, maybe it's the Pittman Robertson act.

It sounds strange, but I looked into it some, and it appears to be real. During the height of the panic, I started pricing things, and looking at different companies (budget tier stuff).

You can buy a complete upper from BCA for about $250, which has the handle and BCG. You can buy a complete lower from them for $159. They literally snap together with the 2 pins, you have an AR for about $400. Their lowest complete rifle is about $640.

I looked at another site, that I bought a complete lower from (and the lower has been fine). It's definitely on the budget side, Karri's Guns. Once you get into the checkout, before you finish, there's a notice on shipping that they will NOT honor and sell what amounts to a complete firearm on a single order, if you are buying a lower. They will void the order, and charge you a fee on your card for attempting this.

So, as of now, I have a few upper + lower guns, all which cost under $500 to buy and put together.
BCA 16" 7.62x39 upper with flat-top (no sights) and M-Lok front grip, on KG lower.
BCA 16" 7.62x39 upper with A2 front sight and standard clamshell grip, on PSA lower (with magpul stock and grip).
BCA 10.5" 5.56 upper with side-charging handle, on PSA lower with MFT brace.

I’m not arguing with that. I’m sure it’ll always be cheaper to buy the upper and lower separately but if OP really doesn’t want to fool with shopping around and assembling anything he can just buy a whole gun and not worry about it. If he’s not looking for anything high end he can get a whole gun for $600 like you said.

Im thinking of dropping 800 on one of the M&P sport models in 556/223. Seemingly, you wont build one much better for that price. Am i wrong or am i wrong. Educate me....

Do it. It’s a fine gun that you’ll have a blast shooting. You won’t regret it.

Not sure about "better", which can mean damn near anything when it comes to ARs, but what you can do is build the exact configuration you want if you piece it together yourself. If you've never owned one you probably don't know what that is, though, and S&W is as good a place to start as any.

If you think you might ever sell it complete guns with a brand name people recognize are a little easier to sell. I don't typically sell guns and none of mine are off the rack, but it's something to think about.

This is why I'm considering it. Buy it and shoot it. Then, from there, decide what I like and don't like about it, and take that into consideration if I decide to build one.

Are there any brands to stay away from?

There probably are, but they'll be companies you've never heard of. Most of the crap builders were weeded out a long time ago. I don't know what new complete gun prices are like but S&W, Ruger, Aero Precision, Colt, BCM (not a great value IMO), and at this point Palmetto State Armory has earned a good reputation, Spikes Tactical; there are a lot to choose from.
