Yeah, I feel you. I grew up on Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth etc. I'll think on it and get back to you, currently working. Off the top of my head though, Sevendust may fit your criteria, as well as Trivium. How do you feel about female vocalists? Spiritbox is pretty awesome imo. Just a few examples:

Sevendust:
Home
Decay

Trivium:
Strife
Throes of Perdition

Spiritbox:
Rule of Nines
Holy Roller

Testament:
Children of The Next Level
Return to Serenity

Been playing guitar for 23 years, and metal/rock is far and away my favorite genre. I'm familiar with a TON of bands, so if any of those interest you, I can certainly recommend more bands, or more from those bands. Unfortunately Pantera is one of those generational bands that can't really be replicated.

Should be interesting...

He started in metal and I’ve listed to a few of his songs years ago but I can’t remember if it was good or not.

I would imagine with the money backing him it will be much more refined than his previous band.

Just adding some stuff randomly here and there:

Strapping Young Lad:
Love
Aftermath

Sikth:
Sanguine Seas of Bigotry
Bland Street Bloom

Sikth's singer is out there, but their music is badass. He can sing well when he feels like it, but has his own thing going on. UK band so take it for what it is.

Vola:
Straight Lines
Stone Leader Falling Down

Devildriver:
End of The Line
Grinfricked

Coal Chamber's singer heads this band. Massively better than CC.

All That Remains:
Two Weeks
frick Love

U.P.O.:
Circle of Life
Godless

Not many know this band (UPO). The bass player went on to form Five Finger Death Punch. A band I have little interest in. With that being said...

Five Finger Death Punch:
American Capitalist
Wrong Side of Heaven

They have a few good songs, but overall pretty meh to me.

Byzantine:
Jeremiad
Taking Up Serpents

You may really like this band. Little known, but pretty cool music imo. Tickles that groove metal itch for me in a way few bands do.

I'll post more after while. Would be helpful that if you like any of these bands, to let me know so I can narrow it down a little and suggest more. Always love sharing music with fellow metalheads.

Nice! Don't know many who know Nothingface. And I'll be honest, I completely forgot about A Perfect Murder. Thanks for the reminder

Check out Goatwhore from New Orleans

I agree. They are badass. I wish they would put out another album. One more tour because I've never got to see them.

I agree. Took my wife to a Goatwhore / Crowbar show awhile back. Best show ever in a small venue. Kirk and the lead singer for Goatwhore was just chilling with us at the bar taking shoots. Very cool people and great music. That is what METAL is supposed to be!

I'm starting to dip my toe into progressive metal and instrumental progressive stuff with metal influence base, none of these are new or unknown artists but they seem to be off the beaten path of traditional metal heads like a buddy of mine who says "good but weird" and his fav band ever is Lamb of God followed by Megadeath.

-Jinjer
-12 Foot Ninja
-Polyphia (i wouldn't call it metal)
-Animals as Leaders (High level time sig fusion metal is what I call it)
-Spirit Box
-Unleash The Archers
-ETA Coheed and Cambria (everyone knows them but they are 'prog' metal imo)

And any time I want to get heavy and have a good time Clutch never, ever disappoints, and I think they can be called metal.

From your description I have to ask if you have tried Jinjer, Prog, groove, metalcore whatever you try to box them into a genre but they are a force. Tight and technical band with an amazing and hot as hell singer in Tatiana.

Jinjer-Perenneal live

Also have become a big fan of a new all female band from a Japan called Nemophila. Also tend to bend genres but have amazing musicians and a unique vocalist.

Yeah Testament kicks arse. They've been around forever, and have evolved a lot over the years. Kept up with the times. Alex Skolnick is an underrated metal guitarist imo.

Subscribe to Stereogum’s Black Market which has the Month in Metal.

LINK /

It’s not a traditional metal music blog, which I think is what makes it so good.

They usually feature around 10 new bands or albums with good write ups on each sort of defining the style. Here is June:

If you like prog, I am all over that too.

Dream Theater:
Pull Me Under
Glass Prison

Glass Prison is one of my all time favorite songs, period. Killer guitar and just an all around basass song. Granted John Petrucci is on a level of his own; an idol of mine on guitar.

Liquid Tension Experiment:
Acid Rain
Paradigm Shift

Gordian Knot:
CodeAnticode
Grace

Gordian Knot is something special. A truly great group consisting of several musicians that played in other groups as well, it is a little know side project. I'd have to look it up to remember who and which groups lol. But is worth everyone's attention who appreciates music. Grace has a serene yet haunting melody. These dudes have BIG brains. It's unfortunate the audio quality isn't top notch, but just listen - you'll likely be glad you did. Always love to share this group when the opportunity presents itself. Fair warning, it's all instrumental. Please give the whole album a listen if it interests you.

Planet X:
Alien Hip Hop

Alien Hip Hop is a rhythmic masterpiece. Check the whole thing out, especially starting from 4:20 until the end. Mind bending rhythmic work.

Desert Girl

Another cool piece. Practically everything they do is out of this world and awesome.

The Mars Volta:
Aberinkula

The Mars Volta is extremely polarizing. You're either going to hate or love them. Singer is.....ODD. But talented. Their musicians are top notch as well. Very, very intricate and they have a chemistry that very few groups have. Give it a try despite the vocals, to see what they have to offer.

I’m a prog rock fan first, everything else comes from that. I was playing concert, marching and some jazz as a kid while also shoving as much Rush, Tool, Dream Theater, King Crimson, Funkadelic, Tower of Power, Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix and Joe Cocker into my ears as I could. Turns out that all shaped my taste at the same time.

Prog scratches all my musical itches pretty much at one time. Mixing metal in is just good plain fun
