Disney and Marvel’s superhero adventure “Black Widow” captured a massive $80 million in its first weekend, crushing the benchmark for the biggest box office debut since the pandemic.
The film, starring Scarlett Johansson, is the first from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to open simultaneously in movie theaters and on Disney Plus, where subscribers can rent “Black Widow” for an extra $30. Disney reported that “Black Widow” generated more than $60 million “in Disney Plus Premier Access consumer spend globally,” marking the rare occasion in which a studio disclosed the profits made from streaming.
Directed by Cate Shortland, “Black Widow” collected an additional $78 million from 46 international territories, boosting its global box office haul to an impressive $158 million. Combined with Disney Plus numbers, the final weekend figure sits at $215 million. Curbing overall ticket sales, however, is the fact that “Black Widow” still doesn’t have a release date in China, which is an all-important moviegoing market for the Marvel franchise.
quote:
“Black Widow” marks a massive win for movie theaters, which have been struggling to recover from the mass closures and capacity restrictions that decimated their business during the pandemic. It’s also notable because it displays that movies can bring in solid box office receipts despite being available on streaming services at the same time. However, David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, notes that Marvel movies are in a league of its own at the box office. Not every new release has the built-in fanbase needed to replicate those results. In total, the 24 films that populate the commercially unrivaled Marvel Cinematic Universe have brought in $22 billion theatrically since 2008.
“Certainly the figure would be higher if every theater were open, if there were zero concern with COVID, and if there weren’t a streaming option,” Franchise Entertainment Research's David A. Gross tells Variety. “For now, those impediments make Black Widow’s opening all the more impressive.”
quote:
For the first time since the onset of COVID-19, the domestic box office has surpassed $100 million in total revenues. The overall weekend tally currently stands at $117 million, according to Comscore. That’s encouraging to box office experts because it comes at a time when 19% of North American movie theaters remain shuttered. After a delayed start to summer, movie theaters will host several buzzy titles in the next few months, including “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Old” and the “G.I. Joe” origin story “Snake Eyes” with Henry Golding.

Some friends came over Friday night and we streamed it on Disney+.
*****SPOILER ALERT******
Consensus: It wasn't bad, it definitely wasn't Wonder Woman 1984 bad but it wasn't all that great either and that latter part is sad since Black Widow has been around since the almost the beginning. She deserved a better send-off.
They did a great job of bridging the time between Civil War and Endgame but there were some things I would have rather seen changed.
1. The initial fight scene with her sister. It was fun and well done, but for the story it was telling it simply didn't make sense for it to last that long (or even happen, really).
2. Where the hell was the Red Room anyway? At one point they are in Russia, then they fly to the Red Room and then they are somewhere where a frickton of SHIELD are allowed to drive around freely (so probably not Russia).
2a. SHIELD's arrival reminded me of...
How long are they "almost there" before they actually arrive?
3. The troop transport ship that landed with all the freed Widows at the end. That would have been far better had it been Steve landing after having been "listening in on SHIELD chatter and heard you were here and that you might need a lift". They could have saved the scene with her and her sister bonding and have her introduce the sister to Nick Fury, thus bringing her in to set her up as the next Black Widow (or whatever they name her).
4. Fighting on falling debris. That was just a bit too much for me.
5. Deadpool.
I'm sorry, I meant Taskmaster.
No, not that one.
Nope, not that one either.
Sigh.
Yes, that one. The Power Ranger one.
I don't mind that they tweaked the origin a bit to make the character gain their abilities through some implanted computer chip (although I would have rathered a contracted hitman with the natural ability because... maybe he's a mutant!) but the daughter being Taskmaster was so cliché they could have just put up a neon sign about it halfway through the movie. This would have worked far better were it the wife (for betraying him) or if instead of a daughter he had had a son and done this to him to save his life. As it was he did it to his daughter simply because she was female and handy, thus making it a cheap gimmick to keep him as close to a one-dimensional misogynist as possible. They could have also given her some lines and personality, made her a bit of an a-hole like the comics character.
5a. They also missed the boat by not having a big final fight between Natasha and her sister versus Taskmaster (see: Cap & Bucky vs Iron Man) to really underscore how much of a badass Taskmaster is.
Other than that, I liked the overall story and that this was more of an action movie as well as how it bridged the gap between the two Avengers movies and the actors did a great job.
6/10.

Just watched it, and first time I the theater for a while. Here’s some thoughts:
1. I forgot to re-watch civil war. I guess I needed to in order to remember what / who was bad and good at that time.
2. If the Red Whatever his name was was so bad, (as in powerful) why was he in prison?
3. I didn’t realize that Black Widow didn’t really have any actual super powers until then. I had always wondered what her superpowers were. Now I know - none.
4. Decent movie. Not as good as Loki or Falcon and Winter Soldier or even Wandavision. But good movie.
5. The damn previews. Man I forgot how much I hated previews until today. Still do (SIDENOTE: Way too many Njnja movies coming out. Not really a Ninja / Kung foo type fan so not really excited that there are 2 of those). But yeah. Hate previews.

Since the OP didn't chance the Header I feel Obliged to used the word SPOLIERS in this post.
I paid Disney Plus and watched it last night. While I love going to a theater, I didn't want to keep paying for multiple viewings so I was fine paying the one time fee to watch as often as I wish.
It was better than I expected but the FX was ridiculous. When Falcon and Steve Rogers fought taking down the 3 hele-carriers it was done right. It was almost believable. The In-Air fight scenes In Black Widow became stupid. It was like Charlies Angels Full Throttle when the girls were in air trying to get to the helicopter falling off the cliff to get away...but much worse.
If they would have followed the Captain America Winter Soldier model of more on the ground arse-kicking fights (they had some but not enough) it would have been better.
The post scene was interesting. Weird place to put an Avengers Grave since she helped saved the planet. Not Surprised that Hawkeye is being used as the segue to next version in this branch of the MCU. My guess is the Hawkeye show will deal with this.
Little Sister could be getting set up to be the next Black Widow if Scarlett isn't brought back somehow.

You'd never know since multiple times she (an un-enhanced female) fights super soldier infused men or aliens with beyond-human capabilities hand-to-hand to a standstill. The MCU's characters' strengths fluctuate like a coke addict's EKG readout.

SPOILERS
Movie was kinda shite. Too many dumb plot devices, not enough ScarJo (which I think was intentional), Dave H was good. Florence Pugh was good. I was just not into it the second she got hit with an rpg in a car, the car remained wholly intact and she remained conscious.

I"m sure here grave was where her birth mothers grave is at. There were other graves there, and it was under a tree just like the bad guy had said it was. There was a reason for that scene when Black Widow asked about her birth mom.

and i'll add that Florence Pugh was hot as hell in this movie. Even my wife kept commenting how hot she was.

I think that was the ultimate point of the film. To transition Florence into the Black Widow role for the next phase. ScarJo isn't "old" by any means at 36, but as has been discussed before, when actresses age, they lose out on these sexy roles. And she may have just wanted out too.
Pugh is 25. They have another decade of Black Widow roles for MCU and D+ productions now.

Florence Pugh was fine AF in her Widow attire.
This is the most important takeaway. Over the long haul, while Scarlett was a great Natasha, I think we're going to be more entertained by Yelena.

I mean a five story building blowing up can't even kill a little girl? No wonder so many of the heros can take the blows they do and keep going, a brick of C4 is about the same as a single black cat here. That or every person in the MCU just has a Wolverine level healing factor, I dunno. But seriously that little girl tanked a building blowing up on her like a pro.
Yeah, I get that it's a comic book movie, but that was a little tough to swallow. If she had been in the building, maybe walking in as Natasha detonated the bomb on an upper floor or something, then the burns, etc would be warranted and obviously not fatal, but carrying the explosive when it blows should've incinerated her.

And the fricking p.o.s. helicopter taking 100s if not 1000s of bullets then getting tagged with a .30 cal only to not go down was also just lazy writing.
This movie was lazy

Once again, why is this a problem with a comic book movie but when it happens in all those 80s and 90s action movies it's no big deal?

Yea. Like any Arnold stuff in any of his films.

People love to poke holes in something they may not like for what ever reason
If Marvel movies aren't made for just enjoying a fun arse ride and awesome action scenes. Then wtf is really?

Considering the burn-out from Marvel films and our spotty enjoyment of the Disney+ series, we enjoyed this Black Widow movie pretty well.
Good supporting cast, kept your interest, decent villain (with Marvel the villains seem to be great or lame). The ending had a conclusion while giving some leeway for a sequel for Scarjo or Pugh.
This is the girl-power film that Captain Marvel should have been.

Saw it over the weekend. I enjoyed it overall but did feel this was more on the Iron Man 2, Thor 2, Captain Marvel tier. I really wanted more Taskmaster.

The thing I enjoyed most about this movie was the great chemistry and rapport between Yelena and Natasha. It was so fun to watch and they're sisterhood goals. Damn shame that's only going to be one movie. It's a relationship that deserves more screen time.
Overall, a solid offering from MCU and great send off to Natasha and Scarlett Johansson's hard work over the last 12 years.
