Big pharma epidemic: commercials influencing medicine

We’ve all seen the ads claiming to cure/alleviate a wide variety of illnesses. We’ve also been shocked at the side effects that seem to trump the targeted benefits (they only do it for CYA).
Leads me to wonder how tired medicine/physicians are of it. But, does ut influence their treatment and handling of patients?
shite should be illegal. From free lunches for the dr offices to brainwashing patients on TV.

I bet docs make a killing off of that. I remember reading somewhere that Big Pharma gives docs kickbacks for recommending their meds

While I’m sure it still happens (much like athletes getting paid,) that was ended in the 2010s.
America is one of only a few countries that allow medical companies to advertise to the public.
For the better or worse of it, it’s a price of freedom?

Did Purdue's marketing campaign benefit all? Is it possible that maybe advertising a drug that you think you might need could be perceived as immoral and/or harmful? I'm all about big pharma. They are the reason we had a vaccine in record time and could have been even faster if it wasn't for the FDA's bullshite. The US and New Zealand are the only 2 countries that allow direct to consumer advertising of drugs. So for the sake of the all mighty dollar we should just allow them to operate carte blanche?

was there a big SCOTUS case regarding medical television ads a while back, or did I dream that up? I feel like this has been a big issue for a long time. Or rather, you never saw the commercials and then a ruling came down and all of a sudden every other commercial was for medicine.

Most doctors give type 2 diabetics increasing doses of insulin even though the disease is caused by excessive insulin. Type 2 diabetics can quickly get off all meds if they adopt a ketogenic diet that doesn't spike blood sugar.
Most doctors give reflux suffers PPIs to lower stomach acid even though the disease is caused by acidic levels that are too low.
Most doctors give patients with high cholesterol statin drugs to lower cholesterol even though high cholesterol is associated with lower all cause mortality.
Doctors can push the most drugs and make the most money by harming their patients.
Doctors, like Gary Fettke and Timothy Noakes, who don't follow the guidelines that cause harm are often punished by medical boards who try to take away their licenses.

It’s called DTC advertising (Direct to Consumer). And, you’re right. USA is only country in Western Hemisphere where this is a thing.
Docs in America soundly rejected it in 80’s, then marketers and advertisers got the best of them, and now we have ads everywhere saying to ask your doc about yada yada yada.

Not all pharma companies are created equal.
Not all pharma drugs are created equal.
The pharma industry is one of the more heavily regulated industries on the planet!!
Offering free pens and note pads with a drug logo is illegal. Offering lunch to the staff so the doctor has 5 minutes to review the safety profile, appropriate and inappropriate patients, how to get the insurance to cover it etc is the extent of 95% of doctor interaction with pharma companies and every dime is tracked and applied to a database that shines a light on how much an individual physician gets from an individual pharma company.
On the political level, DC that may be a different story.
Broad stroke demonization should be frowned upon. Most of La is kept alive by big pharma!

I find that the drugs that you see heavily advertised are generally, the new ones…no one is advertising my $6 blood pressure medicine! As far as whether physicians are influenced by the ads…I don’t think they convince physicians directly to prescribe the drug, but they certainly create an awareness of a particular drug among both doctors and patients. I find that insurance companies are pretty quick to decline coverage on any drug that a cheaper alternative exists.

"May cause death" is my favorite. It pretty much says it all.
Another of GW Bush's fine contributions - the lowering of FDA standards to allow for pretty much any drug to be greenlit, as long as it's produced by a big pharma company.

Sadly, alot of Doctors push these drugs simply because the people just want a pill. I think we are on the same page, but the patient has to want to get better or practice preventive care. Most patients could care less, they just want a pill so they can continue on as usual.

I don’t recall ever seeing a Perdue Pharma or Oxycotin commercial. Do you have a clip or link for one of their commercials?

Most of the rest of the world doesn’t allow competition either. The government picks the drugs doctors are allowed to use. A commie’s wet dream
