I believe it. I used to know people involved in that 220 stuff and saw with my own eyes alot of what is being alleged, so I don't doubt the allegations of stuff I didn't see or hear first hand.
Joel is nuttier than squirrel shite in a way that makes him dangerous for impressionable young people. To good ol baws he would just be an ineffectual, odd sort of man with health problems and delusions of grandeur but to religiously impressionable young people he was and probably still is manipulative, toxic and emotionally abusive.

I find it hard to believe that this dude was hazing people, running fight clubs and calling black dudes N-word to their face.

I'm sure these two have no problems with 14 year old suicide bombers, or 14-year-olds being groomed for anal sex for that matter

Is this the church that would try to bring back people from the dead?

I always take these stories with a grain of salt but I had my own experience with a prominent Baton Rouge church that has turned religion off for me for the rest of my life.
Some of these "leaders" have serious defects and use churches as a mask for their own bad behaviors. I don't find it that hard to believe that some of what has been reported on is true.
ETA: Luckily, even as an impressionable young person I was able to see through the nonsense and wasn't pulled in like some people are

"These are just some of the alleged abuses that were described for this article by more than a half-dozen people"
lol... so 7 people?

There is no way this all true.
It's literally all true. All these bible thumpers down here are basket cases. I believe every bit of this story.

When someone tells me they go to church, this is exactly what my mind goes to.

HAH.
I was working a shitty retail job in college around 06 when a coworker convinced me to go to one of their services. He was part of this program.
TOTAL cult. Bailed halfway through the service.
I'm shocked

I’m sure there’s truth to it, especially about being cult like but I just can’t believe they were abusive to the point of having kids soil themselves & nothing came out about it until now
To be fair, it took years for shite to come out about children of god/family international and the pedophilia/orgies/sex recruitment they did.
The phoenix brothers mostly blew the lid on that.

I wonder if they have hate in their heart about Healing Place and others encroaching on their market share. It has to affect their bottom line at least somewhat.

A religious leader is just a con man with good PR.
I don't doubt the cult like abuse but this is probably a little over the top. Sounds like the cult is admitting that they went too far, so I don't doubt there is some truth to this.

I haven't lived in Baton Rouge since 1995, but between '85 and '95, that congregation was very self-protective and kinda secretive. It always struck me as cultish. I think they took a lot of Jimmy Swaggart's folks after Swaggart's 1988 prostitution scandal.

I'm sure they mean well, but it is kinda cult-ish. The reverse ATMs in the lobby were a thing to behold. They also sell t-shirts just outside the main arena, as if church was a rasslin' show. There 's lots of singing and dancing and clapping. I just stood still and waited for it to pass, like a good Catholic.
