He wanted to open a Restaurant and hire Lou Tepper.

You are talking about the man that hired Curley Hallman...

beaten out them by Tennessee, 65-0
Back in those days Tennessee was an SEC power and also beat the tar out of LSU, though never by that kind of score.

yep, a part of LSU history that we'd like to blot out, for the most part
Why? Most of his tenure was good and key remnants of his teams won a SEC championship and Sugar Bowl two years later.

We were hoping for an up and comer and he had shown some promise at Vanderbilt.

He made Vanderbilt a respectable football team with a strong defense prior to being the HC at LSU. And he replaced a terrible HC in Curley Hallman, so anyone would have been a step up.
Gerry did a good job "bringing back the magic" and put some life back into LSU football. He also recruited much, much better than Hallman.

I think the only reason that hallman got the job because of his limited success at southern miss and that was solely because of Brett Favre.

Why?
because camping out for tickets and getting hopped up for the I-Bowl is something that we should aspire to at LSU? the fricking I-bowl!?!?
got to admit that was a pretty fun bowl game though(cold af)

There's a difference between aspiring to return to that and understanding that that era was a huge improvement on the one that proceeded it and that it was a huge tablesetter for the era that succeeded it.

He hired a guy, Lou Tepper, at defensive coordinator who had said it would take four years to implement his defense. Defense was really bad, but DiNardo stuck with Tepper and that was his downfall.

Was joe dean that much of a cheap arse?
Joe was brought in basically to balance the budget and get us back in budget. Broadhead was the last AD who the athletic dept. actually lost money under.
And Joe did that, but the downside was he kept that as his No. 1 goal cause he was praised for it was his M.O. from then on.
Emmert had to come in an hijack the process to pay Saban and he had to piss of Joe and others to get it done.

lived it baw, who knows what Bo Rein may or may not have done here but this "era" belongs in the Joe Dean thread, he fricking set us back/held us back for quite some time, I just opened up a file cabinet drawer that's full of unused season tickets from those years, I used mine, but couldn't give the rest away

Louisiana politics are known as "Settlers".
They would rather "settle" than do their "due diligence".
Why did they hare the new President? Or the one who preceded him.

Geez pretty depressing to think that I'm an "old timer", cuz I was in my 20"s during the Dinardo years.
I always appreciated Dinardo. He was sort of the beginning for us getting to the next level. I'm not sure we would have landed Saban without those Dinardo bridge years.

we had already been at that "level" during the Cholly Mac era, he just had the misfortune(as did everyone else in the SEC,) of having to play in the same conference with Bear Bryant

Well he lost his first choice because he didn't want to pay a 400K buyout and LSU was a crappy job at the time.
From what I can remember at the time, Sullivan was down the list, as well. They put out feelers to several coaches privately before him and none of them were interested in leaving for what Dean was paying. Sullivan was just the first attainable guy they talked to.
