I would encourage you to ask yourself why you find direction like this off-putting and see if you reach a deeper appreciation for the film.
Magnolia is a straight-up melodrama that deliberately challenges and manipulates you emotionally. PTA took a genre primarily reserved for trashy network made-for-TV movies and miniseries, and attempted to make meaningful art with it. I think it's too easy to dismiss some genre conventions and pretend Magnolia is a good movie in spite of them rather than because of them. But I could be wrong.

Just watched this film for the first time.
Story is ok, but the acting is obviously incredible.
I watched it passively at times as I had it on while working from home. Didn't miss anything to make me confused or anything, but I probably need to sit down with no other distractions and watch it again.
