Zion Williamson is breaking basketball

Great article breaking down how the league just has no answer for Zion.
A lot more at the LINK Plenty of break downs with gifs, well worth the read.
quote:
Zion as a screener in pick-and-roll has been just as deadly. He ranks in the 81st percentile as a scorer, per Synergy, but even that sells him short as a threat. There’s an inherent “who do we guard him with, and how?” problem he poses.
Teams across the league are becoming more comfortable switching their 4s. The prospect of switching a guard or a weaker wing onto Zion is an unfavorable one; he’ll simply seal and score -- he ranks in the 63rd percentile on post-ups, by the way -- or force a double team.
The new-age 4 is essentially an old-school 3; asking them to hold up in drop coverage is a pretty tough task. Like, what more is Robert Covington supposed to do with this?

It seems that zion gets in most trouble when bigs meet zion at the rim and zion goes in with a finesse finish.

Not a fan of all this
Have a feeling guys like Popovich, Carlisle, etc. will be constantly complaining that the league needs to do something about Zion... which means he'll get even fewer foul calls

And to think we don't even have a legit guy that can run that screen with him and be efficient at it. CP3 would have Zion averaging well over 30 a game while he leads the league with 15apg.

Curious how 2017 rondo would've done with him

This play right here is what i said in the offseason i expected to see a lot more of, but with Hayes instead of Adams.
Hayes rim running makes people follow him, then you have Zion barrelling down from the top of the key behind the play, while Lonzo and BI sit in the corners waiting for a wide open 3. Find that PG that run that PNR with Hayes effectively and that is a killer lineup offensively. It's basically pick your poison. You first need to stop the ball handler, then you need to help on Hayes, then it's the ball handlers choice if he wants to dump it back to Zion or hit one of the open guys in the corner. Like i said, CP3 would average 15apg doing this.
and the other positive thing about that play right there, you look at where Adams is after the play happens, and regardless of where the shot comes from, Hart, Zion or the corner, Adams has position to get any miss. THat's another thing they noted in that article about how high our ORTG is with Adams and Zion b/c of the offensive rebounding, despite neither of them being a shooter.

Just wait till we get 2 more deadly shooters around him.

carlisle and Pop can bitch and it won't matter.
Zion is on a fast track to being the biggest star in the league. We all know the league sucks it's stars dongs.
He's going to start getting superstar treatment very soon.

Point Zion is actually both

Might take a while. They have been hesitant to call him like he should be. He only attempted 9 fts last night and was attacking the lane all game.

He’s not the model prototype though.
The league wants high octane run and gun offense, finesse wings/guards, and threes.
Lebron James was the closest to the edge of maintaining the treatment little guys get before being considered a Shaq/Cousins type guy that is officiated with a handicap for defenders.
The narrative on Zion seems to be inching right into that. And given his market, it’s only a matter of time before Stephen A and the Carlisle’s of the world make a full on blitzkrieg from both the media and the league about how refs need to hold their whistle on Zion.

I think Point Zion is a hybrid of Shaq and Russell Westbrook. He’s so insanely strong, there’s no way he should be as skillful as he is

It seems like he navigates that quite well.

We already have the PG who can run the PNR without turning the ball over either. Kira Lewis can also use his speed to break the defense down even more. The defense will have to choose, help quickly to compensate for Kira's speed but leave too much space for Zion. Or stick to Zion and allow Kira to use his speed for a free layup
