re: For people born before 1992, how close was your hometown to a direct Soviet ICBM strike?

I was born in Huntington and raised in Ashland.
We got out in ‘67, barely remember the place. Still know folks there.
It’s terrible. Ashland is a bit better, but that’s faint praise.
That’s an extreme area of economic backwater.
Folks who’ve never been would be surprised at how bad that region is.
Ironically the countryside that’s not despoiled is beautiful.

North Lafourche would have been whipped out from blasts along the river.

Good incentive to make sure those missiles coming out of Redstone Arsenal worked.

Cabell County (now Cabell Huntington) Maternity Ward Class of '68 for me.
What a wonderful place to be FROM and not have to go back TO!

Was born in Omaha and we lived in Plattsmouth, NE. When we would go to Omaha to go shopping we would drive right past the end of the Offutt AFB runway. Sometimes they would be running a drill and scrambling the B52s. We knew we were vapor if it ever kicked off.

Technically, you'd be a plasma until recombination occurred.

Looks like they targeted all nuke plants in the 2000 strike. Lol

Baton Rouge and the Old River Control Structure were targets.

My mother grew up in Huntington and graduated from Marshall in '45. My grandpappy was from Buckhannon, Upshur County.

SAC headquarters.
Offutt AFB in Nebraska was SAC HQ. Barksdale is (or was) the HQ of the Mighty 8th Air Force.

You do know that “whipped” =/= wiped?
You really are not a good speller person.

The Soviets would have whipped it out on North Lafourche.

I was halfway between you and Bham. I’d have seen the mushroom clouds from both before dying a slow agonizing death from radiation poisoning or an even slower and more agonizing death from starvation and exposure during the ensuing nuclear winter.

Lake Charles wasn’t the target, it was Westlake. At that time Olin Chemicals owned the plant that was bought by Arch Chemical and now is owned by Lonza. They were one of I believe two at the time then for a while the only manufacturer of hydrazine in the U.S. Hydrazine is used in the manufacturing of rocket fuels.

Vegas was always a target

Course that wasn't quite enough---spend my last 3 years of High School in Wiesbaden, Germany which was the main Air Base/Airport sending in supplies during the Berlin Airlift.

Yeah but they used to make us do bomb drills at school where the teachers directed us into the hall and made us sit against the wall with our head between our knees and hands behind our head. I remember doing this at school in the late 1970’s early 1980’s.
