Fatty checking in who knows he's obese and realizes society has a fat acceptance problem. You can make fun of me, it won't make a difference.
Stats:
5'9" 233 lbs, BMI 34.4, BF% ~ 35
BMI is a good rule of thumb. Yes there are outliers but most just use excuses to justify why they don't fit. High school me lifted weights 3 days a week and practiced/raced dirtbikes 3 days a week for a couple years consecutively. Was checking in at 182-185 lbs at that time with a 4 pack on the stomach. Losing 10 lbs to get me to the normal weight range would have been pretty easy if I cared about what I ate back then. Did triathlons around 2007-2010, clocking 13-15 hrs a week of exercise. Still didn't watch what I ate very much, and got back down to 197. Was definitely overweight at that time.
First step in fixing a problem is realizing you have one. Lots of people in this thread need to realize they are fat/obese.

No one thinks exceptions don't exist. Though I'm dubious there are very many after playing around with the BMI chart. At my height 165 is overweight. I would have to be absolutely shredded to weigh that without adding fat.

So what 30 million

ok now how many of them lift consistently enough and with enough intensity to make enough changes to throw off bmi? lets say 50% of those. Remember that 30 million includes all the women hitting that 2.5lb curl.
so down to 15 million....les than 5% hence the 95% tag on who bmi is accurate for.
Now, further to your post, how many diet seriously out of that 15 million? lets say half....maybe. ok so now we are at 7.5 million or 2.5-3% at most??
see where this is going?

I see where you going but 7.5 million people is a pretty good size group.
They do exist. Really all I'm saying.

At 6'3, the "normal" range is 148-197 or so... A 148 pound 6'3 man would look like he was approaching death. I am about 210 or so and could stand to drop about 10 lbs... But I'd rather stay 10 lbs over than be anywhere near 150 lbs.

quote:The "normal range" for a 6' person is 136-184 lbs. A 6' 136 lb person is either a tall, skinny chick or a man who was, in fact, just released from a POW camp. 184 is reasonable though, for a puny, 5K weekend warrior type.
"if I weighed what the chart says I should weigh, I'd look like I was just released from a POW Camp"
We can't all have the physique of a skateboarder.

Same, but a 6'3" guy that is sitting at 160 would probably say he'd rather be at 148 than 200-210.
The idea is a 6'3" 145lb guy should look as unhealthy to most people as a 6'3" 210lb guy. The points about fat acceptance ITT are highlighted by the fact that this is not the case today.

nobody said they dont. but they are less than 5% of the population.
As GRT just so eliquently pointed out.....the whole idea that people aer disgusted with the picture of someone at the very very low end of the "normal" bmi that is prolly 20 lbs under weight, if he doesnt lift, but not disgusted by the picture of the guy who is 20 lbs overweight.....well that is what fat acceptance is in a nutshell.

So why is it that the BMI isn’t as much a problem for some states compared to others? Even if it’s all a bunch of BS for those slimmer states, why is it even more BS for these other fatter states? In same vein, why isn’t as much a problem for those Europeans?
I mean if BMI is complete BS, why isn’t it equally completely BS for everyone? Could it be some places are actually fat as shite?
Here’s the chart in 1990
Are you guys telling me people evolved to be “big boned” or have tree trunk legs in 30 years? Or maybe our diets have drastically changed in those 30 years so the BMI should change like that one guy suggested?

say it again for those in the back.
People need to stop using the very low end to justify being fat.
i mean miguel torres is 5'9" 145 lbs who fights at 135 or did. He isnt POW looking, just thin and ripped
Ashiek Ajim is 5'8 (like most guys claiming 5'10) and fights at 135, walks around well under 150. skinny AF, but doesnt look like a POW
Kenny Florian is a true 5'10 and weighed 145 here, does he look like a POW victim?
COREY HILL (RIP) was 6'4 and 155 in this photo. Skinny as frick, but doesnt look sick. Could prolyl use to gain a few but this is an extreme example.
Most of yall way way over estimate the amount of weight you need to lose to be ripped. Most of you are carrying 10+ lbs of just water weight you need to lose.

The problem with that is a 6'3" guy at 145 lbs is going to look sickly and malnourished. But at 210, he's either going to have a dad-bod or be somewhat jacked.
I pulled a random picture off the internet. This guy claims to be 6'3" and went from 145 to 215. I don't think it's fat-acceptance to say that the guy on the right looks healthy.

On the left he's on the border of being underweight. On the right he's been doing heavy weight training, which 90+% of Americans do not do, and would be an outlier to BMI
ETA: even worse, at 6'3 145lbs he's actually underweight according to BMI.

At some point it's going to click for these people that outliers are irrelevant......
probably not though.
ETA: That dude also doesn't look sickly or malnourished in the 145 pic. He just looks skinny and a little oddly proportioned because he is way above average height.

I've seen those maps before but holy shite, we're rocketing towards a public health crisis orders of magnitude worse than any virus and there seems to be no fix in sight. People in general just don't give a shite about their health.

Well that's likely from a website or forum for weight lifting.
Take that photo on the right, remove about 30 lbs of muscle and replace it with 30 lbs of fat around the midsection and you'd have a better look at the average 6'3 215 guy. The choice gets a little harder at that point.
Posted on 3/10/21 at 2:12 pm to DomincDecoco
Even when I was 7% body fat, those damned things said I was overweight. I'm 6' 215 of mostly muscle, 34' waist, and it puts me almost in the obese category. That thing is a sham.
