Once you purchase a pack, those highlights go into your encrypted, secure highlight wallet to be "showcased" or re-sold on the NBA Top Shot Marketplace.

I think that’s the part that makes them unique meaning they can’t be reproduced.
easier to store
easier to transport
easier to maintain
easier to confirm authenticity
easier to display globally
if digital sports cards were created first, people would probably think creating cardboard sports cards was a stupid idea

but the idea is the exact same as physical sports trading cards.
What do you get when you buy this highlight? Is it a login so you can watch the highlight on a special website as opposed to YouTube?

It’s kind of like cryptocurrency. You “own” these digital highlights made with blockchain technology in an online “wallet” the same way you could own cryptocurrency.
Just like cryptocurrency you won’t be holding it in your hands. You can view your highlights in your “wallet” or whatever they call it on the top shot website.

you get to add to your collection. you also get ranked by the moments you collect.
here's an example portfolio LINK

It's more of a password, but essentially yes.

So its basically an NBAcoin but the value of each coin is subjective and not liquid? And the highlight really has nothing to do with anything?

I’m not a super expert here but I know there was a Lebron highlight that sold quite well and it was just a random highlight of him from last year. It was however either a very limited “card” or it might be the only Lebron that had been released at that time. Can’t remember.
I think calling it an NBAcoin is probably partially accurate and a good description. The value of each coin is based on the player involved and how many of that particular highlight is released within this spectrum. Just like a cardboard sports card, you can’t just magically turn it into $. You have to sell it.
I have no desire to own a highlight. I would love to open a pack of these digital cards and find a highlight that someone would pay me $100k for. The value of these things is purely determined by how much people will pay just like sports trading cards.
Collectors items.
ETA: I don’t think the highlight always matters. Like the Lebron highlight wasn’t anything special. At the same time if you got a highlight of like Luka Doncic first NBA basket or something then I’m guessing the actual highlight featured would matter more in that case when it comes to value.

So the downside risk here is that this market becomes Beanie Babies or Pogs?

That would just be speculation. I don’t know quite enough about it to make a guess on the long term future. Eventually, if enough things get in circulation, scarcity becomes less.
That being said, I wouldn’t be shocked to see this start to bring in other sports. I would assume the NFL would be even more lucrative in the beginning.
My guess is that this type of thing will be around forever for collectors but that the value of most will decline as time goes on just due to excitement waning.

Why limit it to sports?
I think if this concept crossed over to music and you could get a first edition one out of 500 digital copy of the next #1 rap single it could be even more lucrative.
Or movies, or TV shows, or even books.
All of these things already exist, just create a digital collector's version.
It still wouldn't make any damn sense to me, but the sky is the limit.

As a sports card collector, no one here can tell me what intrinsic value this product creates. There will always be a desire for the 52 mantle, Fleer Jordan, and various other highly valuable cards.
Has anyone mentioned that you can't even withdraw from this site at the moment, and when you can it'll be a max of $1k a month.

It's the first thing of its kind like this. Of course you can't see any intrinsic value if you don't understand blockchain.

No it's not, guess you never heard of the great Cryptokitties. Tell me again what value blockchain adds to these highlights.
Just because the blockchain can confirm you own the "highlight" doesn't give it value. And it's a stretch to even say own. Owning would imply you could garner royalties any time someone used the highlight.

The scarcity of the item gives it value. Scarcity is created by the use of blockchain.
So yes blockchain gives it value.

Blockchain does not create the scarcity. DapperLabs does and they can continue to increase print runs all they want. Who's to say they don't create a thousand more of these 13-second Zion highlights?
