Border is closed but they make allowances to pass thru BC to AK for essential travel. Look on CDN Border Services website for details.
Ohh and ya pretty much everyone has a cap or bedcover on a truck up north unless you are a farmer. Good luck thanks for your service.

I've made that same drive, get ready for a blast. Incredible trip. Taking the ferry or driving the highway?
Anchorage is like any mid size city in the country, except it has mountains, lots of moose and bear.
Read up on bears and moose and the proper way to deal with them. You'll definitely need that.

One fun part of driving the Alaska Highway is Liard Hot Springs on the BC/Yukon border. That area is very pretty, just coming out of the Canadian Rockies. Muncho Lake, Stone Mountain Provincial Park, etc.

but it's a great place to get your pilots license. Merrill Field isn't too far away from you.
Fact. Also consider Dept of National Resources land sales, get a nice lake front property somewhere to stick a cabin.

You’re gonna need a bigger gun.
I carry a .338 win mag. Big enough to feel comfortable around bears, can also take goat and deer with it.

Artic Roadrunner, cool place to eat. Go and do lots of exploring. Beautiful place, especially once you get out of the city.

Went up there July 2019 and folks were bitching about the heat. Like 85 and humid. Seems like a neat area.

what do I need to know
Earthquakes......you can get used to everything else but these.
You need a battery warmer for your vehicles in the winters; don't need a engine block warmer.
If you see a moose crossing the road...STOP & don't honk your horn.
The ice sculpting "fairs" downtown Anchorage in the winter are the shite!!!!
Ice fog is a real thing.
Earthquakes suck arse!!!!
Mosquitoes are the worst anywhere on Earth.
The scenery is 2nd to none.
Break-up sucks too.
It's amazing how fast you get used to 10 degrees
Get some mukluks; the ones issued by the military (that's why I was there) are the best.
Get a parka with a hood.
Wash your car at least once a month during the winter; car washes stay open year round.
Find a good halibut charter and learn how to smoke it.
Earthquakes still suck.

Do the moose charge if you honk?

For restaurants and beer - Simon & Seafort's is good, and Midnight Sun Brewing is a fun place.
As for getting there, take the darn ferry. One of the coolest things I've done in a long time.
If you don't like three days of this (see pic) I can't help you.
Also take the train to both ends of the line. Seward is like 4 hours away, day trip possible, Fairbanks is maybe 6-8 hours, have to stay overnight. Post up in a dome car or open door way and enjoy the scenery without having to drive, and with a beer or three.

quote:Guy I went to LaTech with 2 years starting Fall 1982 was from Kenai. The State of Alaska used to pay tuition, dorm, food, and $1500 cash per quarter. Sam saved up some of the cash and his 2nd year bought a used Ford T-Bird. Then fell for a girl back home and dropped out of school and drove back home.
.it’s a 4,000 mile drive from Shreveport hahaha
If he had stuck it out and graduated he would only have the interest on the State money and been required to work back home 3 years. Since he quit, he had to pay it all back +interest.
SW Anchorage was my eldest paternal Aunt's Homestead. She sold it to the city with the provision she got to name the streets as they developed. There's a short cul de sac, named "___ Circle" for me, because the rare trips down for family reunions I was always running in circles chasing cousins she said.
Aunt Mary sure had some stories to tell about the establishment of Alaska and how wild and tough things were. She lost twins as infants to the flu epidemic, outlived 3 husbands, one of which has a station outpost named/dedicated after him. She killed an escaped prisoner shooting through a closed door as he tried to break in and then drove 20 miles to fetch the sheriff the next morning. Said sheriff needed her help loading frozen corpse into the back of his truck and never heard anything about it again. Said 2nd husband went on one of the guys trips to moose hunt and came back empty handed to find her in the yard dressing out the moose that wandered by while she was washing dishes.
A half cousin on my mother's side was one of the service members disciplined over meeting POTUS Trump, for being too publicly supportive (MAGA gear while in uniform), a couple years ago when POTUS held that rally up there.

Skip the Griz in the only state in the US that you can get a tag for them? Don’t think so. That’s a $10,000+ hunt for all but Alaska residents. He can hunt black bear all over the lower 48, but not Griz.

The great Alaskan bush company is the first place you'll want to take the family when you arrive. Great scenery there.
