Looking at possibly staying outside of the park. Lines should be low and traffic should be light.Looking at Big Fork or White fish. Any suggestions from people who have been?

I haven't been but im staying in Columbia falls in June. I hear its a solid spot for a base. Plus its close to some good whitewater rafting if you're into that.

Hotel called meadow lake resort. 3 star. Got it for like 160 or so a night on priceline. I think its a golf course also.

Another question. Do I want to Kayak Flathead or Whitefish?

May is not a great time to come if you are looking to explore the park. We usually have a lull period between ski season and mid-June. Snow will still be heavy in the mountains and access will be very limited.

Flathead is very big and windy in areas so kayaking isn’t really popular, as it’s more of a sailing lake. If you want something more mellow, you will probably want to kayak some of the smaller lakes, or Hungry Horse Reservoir. Whitefish is better than Flathead as it doesn’t receive the lake effect winds Flathead receives, but it’s generally packed with boats.

Is it really that bad? Coming first week of June.

I personally would not go to Glacier until Going to the Sun Road (the only road that cuts all the way across the park) opens, which usually doesn’t happen until around mid June even in a normal year. COVID may back that up even more.
If I were booking a trip I would wait until at least mid July (probably late July) to do so.

The whole purpose of this trip is to fish the rainbow spawn in the Missouri and bike ride the Going to the Sun road before they open it up to traffic. I was interested in places to stay in May. I don't want to go in July.

Thanks, you probably saved me a rough day... What about fishing up there in May? I am fishing the Missouri and was hoping to fish Blackfeet for the Cutthroat spawn but the Reservation is closed and not sure they are going to open because of Covid. I looked at Swan Lake, I am worried that anything besides the tail waters will be to high...

Gotcha. I was replying to TW.

It is an extremely warm winter with a really light snow pack. Certain parts of the park will be close but there will be plenty to do and May/beginning of June has 18% as much traffic as July so the park is much more enjoyable. You can rent bikes or even electric bikes to explore going to the sun. I am hoping the flowers will be in full bloom.

Yea, fishing will probably be kinda iffy depending on runoff. A lot of people will fish the creeks that drain into Hungry Horse, so check those areas out if you’re interested.

I went to Glacier at the end of May in 2019. It was beautiful but, as mentioned in another post, the sun road was not yet open. We still managed to do some hiking and had a good time. I want to go back sometime for the sun road.

jesus, is this a thing in montana? do you step on the redds as well?

May is the worst month in Montana for weather. It’s unpredictable and harsh. If we are lucky, it might not snow and rain all month. Plus it’s cold. Winter months don’t bother me, but a cold day in May is brutal.
