fired in his two stints as a DC in the NFL, so he fits the Linehan mold

Kiffin was coming to LSU, unless he got a head coaching job. His time with Saban was ending, as they were sick of each other. He was then fired before the season was even over.

Firing one of your NFL coordinators doesnt ensure Carrol wouldnt recommend Kris Richard to O to be a college DC.
Coaches do shite like that, fire a coordinator\position coach, but then recommend the guy for other jobs elsewhere at a lesser level than the NFL.

Yep. The connections are too strong for it not to be. Ed coached Nielsen at USC and had him on staff at Ole Miss. I think Ed sees himself in Nielsen and Nielsen would be Ed's first choice. The problem is he's not a "big name" to appease others besides Ed, so Ed had to try to hire one of those guys first before he had the leverage to get the guy he really wants...Nielsen.
No one in the college ranks is still playing and looking at NFL staffs Nielsen is the only realistic name that seems to "fit". At this point I'd be REALLY surprised if he isn't the DC. And that confidence will only grow with each passing day LSU doesn't name one. I can't imagine LSU is going to wait until the Saints season is over (which could be as late as Feb. 7th) just pursue a guy who they think may tell them no. No doubt LSU will field calls from other interested parties (which I think was the case the Arnette), but I think Nielsen is the guy unless someone who they simply can't refuse expresses interest in the job

i don't think the fans would revolt if it's nielsen. he at least is a badass position coach with plenty of recruiting skins on the wall while at nc state. at worst, the fanbase would talk itself into the hire in a week or two.
hire someone who's unemployed like richard, then there's gonan be problems.

Ed Orgeron sounds like he has at least one DC target at the forefront of his mind moving forward.
"I have to be patient and wait for the right time."
Gotta be Nielsen, right?
Yes, and if he whiffs on Nielsen we'll probably have to go with Raymond and hope that he turns into an elite DC.

Kiffin was willing to take one of the worst jobs in the FBS to avoid taking another coordinator job. I think we all agree he would have come to LSU if he couldn't get an HC job, but the chances of him not getting any HC offers were slim, once we found out the quality of the openings he was entertaining.
Orgeron should have handled that situation better. It does seem like he's handling this one better, since he's at least interviewing other candidates.

Not really. The college market is slow this year with money tight at smaller programs. When Texas makes their move, Ash will likely be unemployed. He runs a 4-2-5. Reaves isn’t going anywhere. He also runs a 4-2-5. Lukabu is the only guy tossed around on this board who may get hired before we might have to look around more.

Duh, that's all common knowledge but thanks for the lecture. You don't think there's a chance Nielsen ALSO gets a better job offer? That's my point. There is no "agreement" until he signs the contract, no matter how well O knows him.

quote:Truth. If LSU wants Nielson and Nielson wants LSU, there’s no reason the shite wouldn’t be wrapping up by now. He’s a f’n D-line coach. It isn’t like pro ball players wouldn’t be to handle losing a position coach. O will be left at the alter again, and will have no choice, but to hire some unemployed guy(like Richard) to run the D.
My guess is he's Orgeron's top choice, but LSU isn't Nielson's top choice. He probably wants to see what other opportunities pop up..

Watch Nielsen get a DC offer in the NFL

Only thing that is scary is if he turns the job down.

Its funny how people bitch all the time about players “quitting” but are pissed that a coach wont quit on his team that has super bowl aspirations.

He wouldn't have to quit. Guys take jobs and finish out their seasons all the time.

You can hire Nielsen without him leaving his current post until the season is over. Happens all the time.
Yes, but there must be a reason for the delay.
He worked under Coach O at Ole Miss and USC. So there is a relationship there and I’m sure they have been talking.
My only concern would be the Saints giving him a raise.
Posted on 1/13/21 at 3:02 pm to 1999
I don't mind Nielsen but what makes O so adamant on getting someone who never called a defense? He must know something we don't. I know Nielsen probably would be an amazing recruiter. Hopefully we'd be loaded with 5* every year on a dominating front. That could be his play here I don't know. Seems much more riskier than the other names mentioned but I like the high reward possibility.
