How in the word did Clark and family dig up the roots of a 15 foot tall evergreen in the forest with no tools?

Russ is watching what looks like either a Christmas or Thanksgiving parade on tv as well. How is that possible, or what what he watching?
What seems impossible about it? That it wasn't on Christmas Day?

ust rewatched this classic last night and there's always one thing I've wondered about - how much was the bonus check Clark was expecting?
He is in the R&D Department of a Food Additive company. It wasn't uncommon to have profit sharing, where he could have seen up to 30% of his salary in his year-end bonus.
In 1989, an in-ground pool (vinyl liner)could have been purchased for somewhere in the $10-15K range. The pool that Clark envisioned was a gunite pool, so it would have probably been somewhere around $25-30K.

I've always wanted to know where the frick they found these mountains in Illinois
While the background us a bit extreme in the movie, if you head NW of Chicago towards Dubuque, IA the area around Galena, IL and up north into Wisconsin to LaCrosse, WI looks like that picture.

spent a weekend in Galena around Halloween. It was my first time. The wife is from Chicago, and I absolutely loved Galena

Here’s my question, what’s the gift that Clark gives his boss? It must be something common that someone would give a boss, because each gift on table looks the same.

It wasn't to pay for a pool, it was to help the cost.
You don't go from a ridiculous $11,000 supposed bonus to jelly of the month club.
This has been discussed before...max his bonus would be $5,000.
Clark wasn't an executive but a cog in the wheel of a corporation...the boss didn't even know who he was.
He's not making $140,000 in the 80's. That would be $300,000 now.
To completely pay for a pool by a bonus, Clark would've been making $600,000 a year. That would be the equivalent of a millionaire today.
If he was so rich to expect an $11,000 bonus, why does he need it for a pool. He drives a Truckster dammit.
Clark at best made $80,000 to $120,000 in the 80's. Which would amount to maybe a $5,000 bonus.

From what i hear in those days non-sales bonuses could be 10-15% of your salary for hitting certain goals. Assuming suburbs of Chicago, my guess is Clark's salary was $140k - $200kish. So like $14-19,000 probably, which would make sense for a pool.
But in the movie he put down a $7500 deposit and talked like that drained him financially, he was near suicidal when he discovered he wasn't getting a bonus

Love the thread. You guys have put more thought into this than any writer, producer, director or actor every did.

He got a Ford Taurus wagon by the time of this movie (Truckster didn't make it back from L.A.)

Still pretty good in 1989 dollars.

I assumed it was a cologne set or something. That kind of shite was very popular back in the day.
Just read on IMDB and reddit that it might have been a desk organizer.

yes, why was a parade on tv?
I think I remember reading somewhere that the parade they show in the movie is actually the Macy's parade from Thanksgiving.

I guess you're right. It just always bothered me that it was a parade on like the 21st or 22nd
I don't know if it bothered me more than Ruby Sue saying "Him didn't do nothing."
This is my favorite Christmas movie too
