New Home Build - Master Closet

I know there are always new home threads about "What should I do", but I have a question that I haven't seen. Right now in our temp rent house, we are sharing a single closet. Older style, 2 tier rod style, accordion doors. It's brutal.
In my house plans now, the closet is set for 4'-11" x 10'-6". This big enough for 2 people? Of course my wife has a shite load of clothes. I can get by with not a lot of room, but I like my clothes to have a little elbow room. Should we make this bigger?

Our house we are about to start is 6’0 x 19’0. My wife has a lot of shite though!

I don't think those dimensions are big enough for a master closet. You are best case going to get a usable space of
10-6" of double hanging space. It would need to be almost 8' wide to have enough space to use both walls as hanging space/shelves without feeling cramped. I would look for more space if possible. Additionally, make sure you have enough light in the closet. It is often overlooked in the plans but makes a big difference in how the space feels when you can properly see.

We just moved in and ours is 6x16. Wife got 75% of and even commented it’s more space than she thought.

You just have to compromise.
My wife gets our whole closet. I get the spare bedroom closet.

When/if we build a house, there will be a separate his and hers closets - one the size of a normal closet (for me), and a room-sized closet for my wife's stuff.

If you can go bigger, do it.
But, in any case you should look into a closet system that allows for double hanging, one above the other, to maximize your storage space. If you go the wire shelving, one shel route, you will be out of space in no time.

Absolutely. I don’t know how much room you would have with all my wife stuff. Half of it she doesn’t even wear

I don't know the size of our master closet but I wish it was bigger.

Our house is older, and we did some renovations about 7-8 years ago. Ditched the den and made it a master bath/closet. The entire room was roughly 12x14. I split it down the middle. We have a 7x12 space that has the dual sink vanity, and a clawfoot tub. Then I split the remaining piece down the middle. One of the 3.5x7 spaces has the toilet and shower. The other is the wife's closet. And she fills up every inch of it. Of course we still have 12 feet of closet space in the bedroom. Half of it is my clothes and shoes, with double sliding doors in front of it. The other half is our T-shirts, coats, and other things that we both use, with double sliding doors there as well.
I don't think you'll regret going bigger. The walk-in closet is fine for her nice clothes and we put in a closet system that has shoe cubbies at the bottom, with a drawer and shelves above it. Double hanging space on one side, and single rod for longer things like dresses on the other. She also put another shoe rack beneath that side.

Thanks for all the advice. We will def have double racks throughout. I'll try to see where we can maneuver some more room.

It wouldn't be big enough for us, and neither of us is a clotheshorse by any stretch. Ours is 11 x 7, and it's *just* big enough....but we don't store bulky coats or any outerwear in it.
Shoes & boots take up a LOT of space, as do men's suits and ties.

Yep. I've got about 8-10 suits or sportcoats that I haven't worn in forever taking up a good 2 feet of space. I need to see what still fits or what I would still wear when we go back to the office full time. Could probably get rid of half of them easily. Did the same with shoes a couple of years ago. I got rid of about 15 pair of shoes, that were either worn out looking, didn't wear anymore, or didn't need.

Our current house has master closet of 6'x 12'-6" clear. We have double racks on both sides with a built in dresser in the center of one wall. We have enough room for our clothes but the middle space is a little tight when you are both in there trying to maneuver. Last house we had 7' x 17' clear. That was too much, which is why we reduced it on the latest one we built. I would say 7'x 13' would have been the sweet spot. Most of the houses in our neighborhood have closets that are 12'-14' x 12'-14' with an island in them. I just couldn't in good conscience waste that much space.

Have separate closets. Your wife will take over the closet.

Not sure about you, but my old lady has a few feet of long dresses that can only be one row items. If you don't store these in another closet, maybe consider a section a few feet long of single row racks. My closet is L shaped - I have (most of) the short side, wife has the long side.
