Hillbilly Elegy is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long, long time

Just a weird movie. Disjointed past & present time jumps. The actors playing young and current JD Vance aren't very good. It is incoherent. They throw in stupid "poor people" stereotypes. I'm not sure what the message is supposed to be.

I remember liking the book, to a small degree, when I first read it in 2016. It spoke to some of my concerns of opioid-addicted, perpetually impoverished white Appalachians. Not the most ground-breaking book ever written. But I sympathized with stories of Vance’s home life.

As far as the movie, I haven’t seen it. Ron Howard hasn’t made a good movie since Cinderella Man. (He has made 9 movies since then; 3 of them have been Da Vinci Code movies). Solo: A Star Wars Story was somewhat entertaining, but nothing special.

The book is fantastic.

Honestly was unaware there was a movie.

Peter Suderman Review

I was just reading this review. So, they left out all the transformative aspects of Vance’s life, including his time in the Marine Corps? Then what’s the point?

If there was one aspect of H.E. that was most interesting it was the story of how Vance broke away from the cycle or rural poverty.

All the things that took place in 2011 were awful.. the guy that played the older J.D. was legit bad.. Everything with Glenn Close was pretty solid I thought though

LOL. Yale Law School, but I may not get a job at a good firm.

Did not read the book yet but watched interviews with Vance discussing it. Decided to watch the movie and found the story very compelling. Amy Adams and Glenn Close performances were solid.

Looks terrible. More like how Hollywood envisions dirt poor Southern hayseeds would talk, act and think.

Good book, great book I don't think it matters. It's what Hollywood does with the screenplay that determines if the 'story' is good or not.

I have to say this is the most ridiculous 25% RT rating I’ve ever seen. It’s a wonderful movie honestly. The critics are just pissed they mocked the elites at the beginning and say the film mocks the middle of the country. It does not. Living with a loved one who is a major, major addict and feeling as if it’s my responsibility to keep the family together and everyone else sane, this movie meant a lot to me. Sorry, maybe it’s like Lost in Translation where you can’t appreciate the movie unless you’ve lived it, but this was the best movie I’ve seen since Jojo Rabbit and bar none the best picture of the year. Bravo to everyone involved in this.

The book was great and really hit home with me. The movie is pretty confusing.

How much time have you spent in Eastern Kentucky? I can tell you about my grandfather's next door neighbor who believed that professional wrestling was real (small town farmers in rural Eastern Kentucky). You can't get more stereotypical than that.

I loved it. I didn’t take it as a movie about poor people, but the depictions are pretty consistent with documentaries I’ve seen about Appalachia. I’ve never read the book, but my take was that it’s more about family and addiction.

It was a perfectly passable 6.5 out of 10 for me. The two main ladies in the movie were really good, Amy Adams can roll out of bed and put on a great performance.

The grandmother had a line that I want to unironically and seriously use one day. When the people are lining the streets for the grandfather’s funeral, she tells the little boy, they respect us. We are hill people.

Well one day I want to take my son to work and when all of my underlings stand up and come shake my hand when I walk in to lead a meeting, later on tell him, you see that son? They respect us. We’re Swamp people.

I just watched this. I hadn’t read the book but I had read part of this thread and I actually liked it- possibly helped by having low expectations. I don’t think it was some cinematic masterpiece but I still found it a good watch even if it had some cheese to it. I didn’t really think they made the poor folks look stupid either- maybe a little trashy and hopeless but not just outright dumb.

And according to the pics at the end, they nailed Mamaw with Close.

Recently watched this. It did a good job of showing how addicted people are total frickin chaos every time they show up. Nothing is ever their fault and they have to be the center of attention.
