$4,500 on a Jaguar XJL - a plastic part in the A/C system melted because their poor design places it too close to the transmission, so it leaked and flooded out all of the carpet. It was a couple months out of warranty. They had to remove the entire dashboard and seats to replace the part. And that was even going the cheap route and not replacing the carpet - just drying it. Got rid of the car after that because the replacement part is plastic just like the one that melted.

2,400 on a blown head gasket, new radiator, new T-stat, and a few other things on my old Jeep. Mechanic said the T-stat was stuck so he couldn’t tell if it caused it to overheat or something else did and that just got caught up in it blowing. But the engine was fine and he recommended a new gasket and machining of the parts. Ran great for another 2-3 years before I sold it. Guy I sold it to is still driving it.

I just replaced all my spark plugs and coil packs in a 2011 f150. Total parts was like 300 and took me about an hour...

I remember spending something like $1500 on the transmission for my Chevy Beretta around 1995, which was a LOT of money then.
It was only like 5 years old and I was pissed, but I really liked it and drove it for another 5 years and had no issues. So I guess it was worth it?

Changing parts on some cars are more involved than others.
Just the spark plugs are $380

Talked to a guy the other day who’s wife’s new Toyota suv was hit in the side. He said the repair bill was $52,000 and the insurance company did not total the vehicle. I had no idea that Toyota made an SUV that $52000 wouldn’t total it.

Fully loaded Land Cruiser?
I would fight my arse off over that. Car will never be the same.
Have to imagine once they get into it discovery work will push it over the edge.

Once I spent about 400 when the car wouldn't start. Not even sure what was fixed.
They probably just had to clean corrosion off your battery cable and suckered you out of $400.
