Possible evolution of the catcher as well. More athletic more accurate throwers
Caught stealing percentages used to be much higher. Roy Campanella is the all time leader at 57%. You need to go pretty far down the list to find any modern catchers. Certainly part of that is that practically anyone would attempt to steal back then.
The slide step went mainstream around 1990, just as steroid use was spreading everywhere. Then modern analytics started showing more definitive risk/reward analysis, and the proliferation of the PED aided HR tilted that ratio heavily toward cautious baserunning.
Stolen bases tried to make a bit of a comeback when PEDs were finally addressed, but new analytics have apparently proven that always trying to hit the ball as far as you can is the most efficient way to score runs.
Baseball needs bigger ballparks.

I feel like Ricky would steal third base as well. You never see anyone steal third
The great base stealers will tell you stealing 3rd was easier than 2nd due to the better jump.

Rickey was better than good. He would tell you that as well.
Use to love watching Coleman and Mcgee as a skinny kid myself lol

Catchers are better and pitchers are throwing harder.
Catchers aren’t better. Replay happened and rather than giving the base/tie goes to the runner we now have instances such as guys getting “out” because the beat the throw but they momentarily lost contact with him the base while sliding and the shortstop kept the glove on.
The margin of error is nil now which sucks because base stealing is fun to watch

My favorite part of the Rickey Henderson story is that the afternoon he set the record held up the base and made that retarded speech about him being the greatest... then Nolan Ryan threw his seventh no hitter that night and Rickey was an afterthought.

If I had the 1st pick in the all-time MLB draft (not including pitchers)...he is my pick.
I think when he applied himself...he was the best baseball player ever.

Not sure about best ever but he is the GoAT lead off hitter EVER and it’s not even close.

Everyone is trying to smash a home run, so whats the point of going from 1st to 2nd base when the batter is going for the fences and not a base hit?

I really like Schmidt, but no way he’s on the same level as Mays

SB are cool, but the most awesome play in baseball is stealing home from third base. Run the stats on that.
The Georgia Peach and there ain’t a close second.

Ryne Sandberg for example in 900 fewer games had 10 more triples.
He was also terrible when it comes to advancing on hits

Why steal a base when all hitters do is hit home runs or strike out?
And yes....he was.

Hold up... when you have a possible triple, aren’t you usually busting arse out of the batters box? Was he not good at spotting the third base coach?

The long standing theory is that Rickey hated going for triples because it would take away from his stolen base opportunities. It's obviously a lot harder to steal home than it is third base.

Vince Coleman. GOAT.

Rickey was the best ever!

My first game ever was in Oakland.
Rickey led off with a homerun and stole a bag that game. Made my day. I had several Rickey posters on my wall.
Eta... whole game made my day. Everyone noteworthy made plays. Dave Stewart started. Bad arse day I'll never forget.
Did Eck close it out?

Still have his rookie card. Was my favorite player all time.

If Rickey hustled on the bases like Pete Rose he would probably have been the best ever, better than Bonds and Ruth.
Rickey is already the all time leading run scorer and he probably left 300+ runs on the table
